Hi all,

I've rencetly had a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus9 200Gb drive die on me. - It stopped spinning so assumed the motor was dead. I had an identical drive so movd the platters into the donor drive and now all i get is a clicking noise when i boot up. The bios doesnt recognize the drive so I am unable to recover anything. I spoke to a data recovery company who said that the platters need to be specially aligned and would have to charge me ££££ to get it fixed etc Is there anything I can do to try and salvage my data without sending it off? Would I be able to re-align the disk myself? I read somewhere that by putting it in a freezer this might re-align it?

Thanks in advance guys

Are you taking the P*SS? How did you move platters? Did you keep them aligned? Your data is probably gone for good. Be prepared to pay big buck just to attempt a recovery regardless of outcome.

What was you thinking? If I had a pain in my chest I wouldn't remove my heart without going to the doctors first. I'm sorry to say but you are stupid.

You COULD put it in the freezer, but I'd recommend you don't bother taking it out again.

A little knowledge is a VERY dangerous thing.

I would do it if he is willing to pay me £100 per hour regardless of outcome.

Hello all,

Yes in hindsight you are probably all right in that it was stupid to remove the platters without using any speicialist equipment to hold the alignment although I am not a pro or amateur in data re-covery just an end user who thougt it might be worthwhile...

I've just spoken to another recovery company who charge a flat rate of £295 plus VAT plus any parts required who have said they think they can recover the data or no charge at all. I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Is this company fully aware of what you have done? £295 is nowhere near enough to cover labour alone considering the difficulties this job will entail! Maybe more like £2950 would be accurate

I can guarantee the data will not be recovered for £295 plus Parts, Plus VAT. It's not economically viable. Unless the cost of parts are £2000.

Try describing the method you used to:

a) remove heads
b) transfer platters

Maybe from this we can determine if in fact there may be a chance? And please dont say you transfered platters one at a time!!

SALE NOW ON. 6 YEARS AND COUNTING! Easy Recovery is £249.99 not £295. How many companies offer fixed price recovery for £295. can't be that many.

If you've removed the heads and platters yourself, and they recover the data for £295, I will show my ass.

And it's not pretty!!

Did you explain to them that you had physically removed the platters, or did you simply say that you thought motor was damaged?
