I have bad problem. My harddisk with all my data for PHD thesis fell down from table when it was switched on. Now my computer doesn't recognize it any more. We tried to slove the problem by cooling the harddisk down to -20°C, but no effect. It starts running but interupts rapidly, runs again and so on. After that we opened the hard case under dust-free conditions and some small particles (like dust) were on the platters. We tried to clean it with compressed air. Then we started the harddisk. As you see in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHMDFYjHEkI, the platter starts to spin, but actuator arm interupts the selftest.

What can I do. There are several weeks of work in these data

Its a really simple solution. Follow my 2 step guide.

1. Send it someone who knows what their doing.

2. Increase your credit card limit by around $4000.

3. You have opened in disk and contaminated media surface (probably)
4. You have modified the unique alignment that WD drives have
5. You have identified 'dust' on media - this could be particles of a damaged heads, results of media scratches etc

You need to consult a professional, be prepared to pay for physical work. Be prepared to increase the cost of recovery because you have opened the drive.

You will lose a lot of money getting this data back, but you will learn a valuable lesson:

At present, nothing. Sad but true. In any case, if there is no further damage, data is safe and sound INSIDE the disk, so you can seal the drive a store it in a safe place, and wait until you can afford a professional help.
Honestly, I wouldn't accept an already opened/contaminated drive in order not to gife false illusions even if it is against my interests. My personal advice is to keep the disk until you can afford or have the help of a REAL PRO. Until then, try to avoid any further damage to the data. Let us know what happened.

What is it going to cost you in time and money to redo
your thesis? And how much time can you afford to wait?
That is what your data is worth.
So your choice is clear , Pay someone to retrieve the data
or you rebuild your data from your notes, you did keep notes
on paper didn't you ?

So you have to decide what is the true value of your data?

PS . the more you try DIY attempts on the drive, the worse
you make it.

Just curious... was the fried rice found INSIDE some Singapore made drives ? And now, Prodata, you have to publish the recipe !!

Ingredients:
1 - 2 green onions, as desired
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon salt
Pepper to taste
4 tablespoons oil for stir-frying, or as needed
4 cups cold cooked rice
1 - 2 tablespoons light soy sauce or oyster sauce, as desired
any vegetable as desired..

Preparation:
Wash and finely chop the green onion. Lightly beat the eggs with the salt and pepper.

Heat a wok or frying pan and add 2 tablespoons oil. When the oil is hot, add the eggs. Cook, stirring, until they are lightly scrambled but not too dry. Remove the eggs and clean out the pan.

Add 2 tablespoons oil. Add the rice. Stir-fry for a few minutes, using chopsticks or a wooden spoon to break it apart. Stir in the soy sauce or oyster sauce as desired.

When the rice is heated through, add the scrambled egg back into the pan. Mix thoroughly. Stir in the green onion. Serve hot.
