Hi

I am looking for some help with two hard disks.

Last week, my PSU failed whilst using my PC at home - PC switched off followed by the aroma of electrical burning. I purchased a new PSU thinking that would be the solution to the problem.

It appears the motherboard needs replaced. However, it would appear that it has also affected both my hard disks which are now no longer working.

I have connected them to separate power supplies (with a SATA to USB connection) at home and even tested with the assistance of the IT guys in my work. Whenever connecting a power supply to both disks (one a master, the other a slave) the disks do not even spin.

My dad checked the power connections using a multimeter and they appear to be live.

Obviously, I do not want to lose the data on the drives. Can anyone suggest other things I could check or other assistance I should seek?

If you have checked both disks and they refuse to spin, I suggest you check your savings as you will need a pro to recover the data.

Thanks for the reply. The conversations I have had with others have meant that I have been coming round to the harsh reality of that!!

If you are willing to try:

Find an exact model match and swap the PCB. Then copy the data off that drive. Then do the same for the remaining drive.

This has worked for me with drives of this model that have blown PCBs. However, if the preamp is damaged, you definitely need a pro.

A client brought in a RAID with two toasted drives. One could be recovered in this manner; the other had a bad preamp.

Thanks for this and to all for your help. Hoping this may be the fault. Its worth trying for all it is going to cost for a replacement drive.
