Hi, I am trying to fix ST3100340AS (1TB drive) using TTL-232R-3V3 and the following guide.

Quote:
Turn on power to the RS232-to-TTL adapter and the hard drive.
Press CTRL+z.
F3 T>
F3 T>/2 (enter)
F3 2>
F3 2>Z (enter)
Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 0.147 msecs
F3 2>
Very carefully, remove the cardstock that you placed between the PCB and the drive head contacts.
F3 2>U (enter)
Spin Up Complete
Elapsed Time 7.093 secs
F3 2>
F3 2>/1 (enter)
F3 1>N1 (enter)
F3 T>m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 (enter)

When I execute step "F3 1>N1 (enter)" I get "Unknown Diag Cmd Failure 12CC4" message.
I tried this method three times.
There are no clicking sounds and spin up sounds smooth.

Can you help me?

Thank you, if you can, and even if you can't.

Just realized 12CC4 must be hex. Converted to binary: 00010010110011000100

There are 20 bits. What does it mean?

You should better ask the people that provided the DIY guide, enough is enough. Are you aware of the fact you can brick the drive even more than it is ?

Yes. I just want to do this myself. The data is not important AND it is backed up. I might have some hassle with Seagate, because it is an OEM drive, but mostly, I just want to fix a hard drive.

And there you have it, it is not a seagate as it has OEM firmware, so the fix will not work on OEM drives - only Seagate. So you will need to send it to a pro (+data) or return it to OEM for replacement (-data)

Pros and cons of DIY  but don't expect a training course or info about drive internals for free. Google sometimes can be your best friend, otherwise we are talking about JOBS TO DO not THINGS TO SAY.

Unlikely. I bought it and installed it. All OEM means in this case, is that it came with no packaging, no instructions, and was slightly cheaper than a packaged retail version. The label claims the firmware is SD15, same as retail drives.

Please stop trying to save me from myself. If you know what 12CC4 means, please tell me. Otherwise, ignore this thread. Let's end the drama.

What is the number etched into the board ?

This will give us the information we need to see if the internet fix will work.

Does HDD stay busy or has capacity of 0? If disk comes ready with 0 LBA you do not need the N1 command.

I'm not sure where you get that. Most of the hard drives out there are sold through OEM, but still maintain their original manufacturer's firmware. Why would Dell want to modify the firmware on a hard drive for their systems? I think that pretty much all the Seagate drives I've fixed with this firmware issue were OEM.

Mike31T, it is fixable most likely
BTW Seagate offers free Data Recovery through i365 company for drives with LED CC problem
Why don't you call Seagate, get Customer number, send it to i365 and get your data for free (You even shouldn't pay for shipping)

I know why that was said. Some 7200.11 (ES and Maxtor) and some OEM versions do not all respond as expected to the fix for LED CC problems. You need to get the drive to come ready a different way to removing motor connector. Doomer knows what I mean ;) HP have their own FW rev starting with HP such as HP24 or HP26.

It is 7200.11 1TB M/N:ST31000340AS S/N:9Q0P3GT Firmware: SD15
PCB is: UJAJ-6, 100466824, Rev C

I got the drive from a retail store, which sold it as OEM. The label states that this drive was meant for OEM distribution, but I doubt Fry's modified the firmware before selling it.

The 'fix' should work on that drive, so you probably need to send it to a pro :)

Yeah, I checked that model number on Seagate's website before I started this whole thing.
This is not about the data. Everything except a few new bookmarks and savegames is backed-up.

Reasons to send it out
1)$100 is 'expensive' to me
2)I would get a working drive back

Reasons to keep it
1)RMAs are usually painfully annoying
2)I can't erase the drive if I can't access it
3)There is bank account and credit card info on that drive
4)I don't want some asshole laughing at my pr0n
5)I like fixing things

So I am going to do the stupid thing :P
