Hi, hoping someone can help...

I have a 5 year old 80gb hard drive which is currently in a Time PC. I think it is a Seagate. It is missing an operating system so I can not start the PC up. I would like to recover previously deleted files using an undelete program.

Does anyone recommend a program to do this? The files I wish to recover were deleted 4 years ago, is that too long ago?

Could I use my new laptop to connect up my hard drive somehow to do this? Or would I need to use the PC that the hard drive is in?

Any tips or guidance gratefully received!!

Thanks

If the harddisk has been used for some time (couple of weeks) in the last 4 years, then recovery is impossible.
Data has long been overwritten then.

You should be able to attach this to your working lap top and not have to use the pc it is in. You will need to purchase as usb box or exteranal enclosure to do this with. Normally after that long of a period of time the disk will over write to itself making recovery of documents not possible to find. There are some good software packages out there that you could try. Maybe check into get data back for ntsf and fat depending on your file system you are using. Sometimes even WinHex can help out in this area and recover some files that have been deleted. If the files are fragmentated you will need to checked into even another software to try and recover and reconstruct these files. But good luck you still have the other files you can transfer to your laptop computer. Give it a shot and see what you can find

Wow - I guess I am not reading correctly what he asked and you are. He did ask if he can use his new lap top to recover this drive with because his old computer is missing an operating system/ I simple answered yes you can use your new lap top to do this with you will need a usb extrenal box to hook it up to in order to use the lap top.

Also I did not see where he stated that he had not used this drive in the past 4 years. He was asking if he could recover data off this drive that he deleted 4 years ago. Well I am sorry but once data is deleted from a drive and the drive is used again to store data on it will over write the data on the drive. Also any drive that you delete files on and it is a system with an OS everytime you start the OS it has a log file to do auto recovery from and it too can over write the data to the disk where the files where deleted from. I know that when a file is deleted it stays on the disk inside the clustor until it is needed again by the program and then it will use that clustor and over write to that cluster. So please explain to me where I am wrong and correct me if you please. I just read what he asked and answered him that he can use his new lap top to try and recover this drive with.

But yes you are correct if he did have another computer attaching this drive as a slave drive to that system using the cabling is a lot faster in the recovery process than using and external usb drive. But considering he does not have this I gave him another option that is all. Sorry.

No problem I was just wondering if I did not understand English so well and was reading what he wrote wrong. I too can make mistakes and being corrected is part of life and learning. So if you have other information that I am not aware of I am willing to accept where I am wrong and learn from my mistakes. Everyone has special programs and material they use for this job and I know mine but not all of yours. I am willing to try new things and see if they are better than what I am using now. Have been doing this for a long time but there is always new and better ways coming up each and every day. No problem
