Hello all, I was talking to a sales representative from ontrack data recovery. She told me that ontrack only uses sole proprietorship tools developed in house and not available anywhere else. Is she telling me the truth?

I guess what they are saying is true. Most DR companies use proprietary hardware and/or software as well as commercially available tools like pc3000, deepspar imagers, etc etc

It's for the 80gb Hitachi?

Yes I can understand that most DR companies use commercially availabe tools, but they said they were using only sole proprietor tools. Which means CK they are not using pc3000 etc, rather their own system. I just wanted to know if they really did have their own system, and if they do then is it better than the commercially available tools. That might explain why they don't make it available to the outside.

Hello BlackST, Nah the 80gb Hitachi is still waiting for a pair of heads . They called me to offer DR services, and I was just asking what setup and tools they had to back their DR services... but don't worry I will publish results of the 80g hitachi when I can track a donor down....

NOT TRUE! they use PC3000 lots of it!!! , proprietary my a##~!!

I can say the big ones - that doesn't mean having big balls - use ACE and in-house designed tools and software. BUT even if I buy the same scalpels and surgical tools used at my hospital I'll never become a doctor - or if I buy a Nelson Pessoa saddle and the horse he was riding, I'll still be me and ride like I do. Happy with that.

Thanks Headcrash, I thought they were lying to me... It just didn't make sense. I will follow up on there offer with a little 'bait' to see what response I get hehe.

I dont think so. Its probably just software recovery.

Im sure OnCrack purchased VOGON partly because VOGON were quite HOT on SCSI recoveries back in the old days...

OnCrack is just one big illusion of a "MASTER" recovery company ... IMHO

Hi,

According to what I can find searching in google, ontrack was founded in 1985 and ace was founded in 1991. Why would you think ontrack does not have the knowledge or expertise to develop their on tools when it has been around for even longer than ace?
They also seem to have acquired ibas (founded in 1978) and vogon (1985) which comes up to almost 80 years of combined knowledge.

Just because someone was established first does not make them any better than anyone else. Experience counts for a lot, but ambition, dedication commitment and research can make all the difference.

We had a guy from Ontrack come for an interview once, he told me he could not recover a RAID 5 using Winhex as they have their own unique software for assembly of arrays. Also, he could not repair common SA faults as there were different departments for different problems. And to confirm, he said they do use PC3000.

I am not doubting that as a company they are successful and experienced and have a good success rate, but as for individual engineers maybe not so much.

Maybe they are so dependant on the 'in house' tools, probably acquired from Vogon and Ibas, that outside of Ontrack the skills and experience would not count for much.

Would be interesting to get some clarity. Keep your friends close, your competition closer lol

Hddguy- As you said, you can't assume someone is good because has been doing something for a long time, what I don't understand is why you would assume that someone isn't.

I would not judge a company just by meeting one employee... but then I would not trust an application to figure out a raid 5 for me either.

I don't see anything wrong in having different teams for different tasks..after all you don't see hdd manufacturers developing file systems.
