Hi all!

I have some questions about Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8.

What is the meaning of the 3. digit/char of the serial number?
I only know the 2. is the number of heads.

Where are stored the MAIN and ALT SA SelfScan log data in Maxtor ?

Thanks for replies.

Does the SS process create a logfile on hdd?
Why important the 3. char of serial number (donor choose)?

erm the selfscan process creates lots of logs.. First partial self servo then SCRW (Script Write) After that Self Test After That MIT test after that maybe FPGA depends upon lots of things... So lots of logs... And all specific.. Good luck to translate them into human readable format

Not serial number you mean something like K,G,G,A it is characters below the serial number

Thanks for replies.

@N.C. Very funny, or LINUX better. I use the word 'file' instead of 'data'.
@Guru Maxtor serial number (SN) e.g: E1EXDKDE not K,G,G,A
the second char(=1) means the number of heads I mean.
But why important the 3. char(=E) of SN for donor choose ?
Ok, so no (human) readable log remains after SelfScan in hdd.
@BlackSt Regards

Yes, all DM+8 have one head.

@Iszerda : E like 6E040, 1 like 1 head, [only serial, 5 digit], E (as i see always E on maxtor DM series)

exactly.... lol the ABC was started by Doomer.

Maybe NC could add an extra head into the DM8 on his research and make 80GB ;o)

Maxtor DM = Death Machine

Maybe i can use another HDA upside down....
This is good for reach the full height as well to fit good into the 3.5" holders. :mrgreen:
Additionally with 2 MHA i can make half seek time with twice seeking heads. :mrgreen:

But i know this is not worth.
The N40P is the failed series of the 6Y080L042 series.
The upper side is completely unusable. 8)

Yes, and the hidrogen has one electron, too :lol:
The question was not- How old is the captain... but the meaning of the third char of SN (SerialNumber, 8 char).

Quote from a 'stolen' content:

"MAXTOR DRIVES
The second number of the serial number represents the number of heads Maxtor needs the 2nd and 3rd char to match"

Question B:
How can I find out why and which point stopped a failed SS, without PC3000/HRT?

Question C:
Is it possible to build a full SA in ALT SA by replacing it's mods
to reach the LBA data?

Q A: Allready answered.
Q B: Still pending. :mrgreen:
Q C: no. Alt SA is ONLY for maintenance, repair.

Is this the answer for the first question?

@Iszerda : E like 6E040, 1 like 1 head, [only serial, 5 digit], E (as i see always E on maxtor DM series)

6E040 is the Model name not SN as I know.

The 3.rd char is only a part of the SN.
If your donor match this is good, because it is close to the patient's series, thats all...

@Iszerda:

U never mentioned for what component U would use from the donor. (head, pcb, spindle motor...)

Hi pepe!

I would try PCB swap first (without soldering external ROM) if possible.

My drives param:
6E040L0510605 KMCA AAA NAR61590 B8FEA E1G38P2E
6E040L0510614 KMGA AAA NAR61590 B8FEA E1EXDKDE

Other question: How much time is the SS process on DM+8 from ALT SA and from MAIN SA?
