hello,

First of all, sorry for my worst english, i wish you'll understand me :)

This hard drive worked well during months and one day, a friend used a wrong power supply (24V) with his WD Mybook and it never started anymore. Now when i power it, i hear only a little noise tick noise, no spin up, just a little tick in continue which increase in speed during few second and still at the same speed after. It's not seen in bios.

I tried to look and smell if anything was burned, none
Looked for dead diodes (mainly d3 and d4), none
The drive was connected by molex power connector so i tried by sata power connector, not worked, only the tick noise still continue.
I also looked this thread (and other one) noise-related-pcb-hdds-final-edition-t7986.html

checked r120, q3,q4 seems to be ok.

I suspect the second problem description 'continuous noise' to be a good clue but i prefer asking some point of view before doing something. Noise is more 'tick tick tick ...' than 'trrrrrr'

I thinked about changing the pcb but i don't find exactly the same (same model but different dcm)

Information about this hdd

model : wd2500js - 00MHB0
dcm : hbbhytjahb
date : 10 Nov 2006
product in Thailand

Any idea or help is welcomed

Thank in advance

Regards

Try it. If it spins the motor your halfway home.

Nobody can fix your drive with such problem without seeing it. If the data is worth, get at least consult with a pro for SERIOUS initial diagnose. Then your data = your choice. I won't give any advice that can put your data at risk. Maybe someone else.

P.S. if you really want to do it by yourself with trial and error, you can likely end with more damage or money spent for nothing i.e. PCB changed and you have fried preamp too INSIDE the drive . If data is not important, get another drive, it's cheap nowadays !

Hello,

I'm not asking for people who can fix it, i'm only looking for your knowledge about hard drives in general.
If i ask some information about dcm and other stuff is to try to solve this problem by myself, otherwise i'll ask for a good recovery data pro. BlackST you warn me about the risk, thank you anyway :)

But asking is also to know if someone know this type of hard drive and may tell me 'hell guy, throw it away, those drive are junk' or something like that :)

It doesn't seems to be the case for this drive so i'll try to do something, like swapping the pcb ( and u12 chip ) as suggested by Zero Alpha, unless someone have an another point of view or idea.

Thank you.
