Like Eric Lee says, you will still need pro help to transfer/reprogram the ROM.

So what exactly do you propose doing with this new PCB?

If you're thinking just to fit the new PCB and expect the drive to work, then think again!!

This was an external hard drive. I have had it for four years and never had problems with it until one day. I connected it to computer's USB. The LED stayed light and the computer did not recognize it. I tried it as a slave to a PC, it was not recognized by the machine either. I need help in either replacing the PCB or reprogramming it or whatever it takes to get my data out of it. I am an Electrical Engineer and can do soldier, de-soldier, programming etc. I have fixed a hard drive before and any help will be appreciated.

Does the drive still spin up? If not, then sometimes there is an easy DIY fix.

Yes, the drive spins fine, but it will be recognized by the PC. can you send me the link for the DIY?

People often overvolt their external drives with the wrong AC adapter. The result is that the drive's circuit board is damaged. In such cases there is often an easy DIY solution involving the removal of a shorted protection diode. However, this does not apply in your case.

The "ROM" that others have referred to is a serial flash memory chip that stores unique, drive specific "adaptive" information. It is usually located at U12, or within the MCU (big "M"). In your case U12 is unpopulated, so the adaptives will be internal to the MCU. This makes a "ROM transfer" a difficult proposition for a DIY-er. In any case, if the PCB spins up the drive, then the problem is more likely to be an internal one.

If you are determined to fix this yourself, and assuming that the drive's heads are reasonably OK, and if you have plenty of time and money, then you could buy Salvation Data's HD Doctor for WD. It costs around US$600, but you could resell it for $300 afterwards. That's what I would do, but I already have some familiarity with the technology (I'm also an electrical engineer, FWIW), so my learning curve wouldn't be as steep as it would be for a complete novice.

That said, occasionally people have been lucky with a straight board swap. I'd also see if the board can be detected by BIOS when it is detached from the drive. Perhaps it is an IDE interface problem. You could also check whether your replacement PCB can be detected on its own. Some boards identify themselves as “WDC ROM MODEL–<hard disk family name>", where the family name is something like HAWK or MAMMOTH. If you see this, then you'll know that the IDE interface is OK.
