Hi, I'm having problems with my 1TB HD. It is an external My Book Essential edition. One day I was going from computer to computer managing data when I accidentally unplugged it when it was searching for drivers on my new laptop with Vista.

From then on, it hasn't correctly worked with any computer. In the device manager from my XP desktop, it will register as just "WD" under the disk drive category. It will not show up in my computer, and when I check its properties, it comes in as a "2048 GB drive" with a driver published by Microsoft in 2001.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems, and how did you solve it? Thank you for your help in this matter.

There's no "low level format", but taking the drive out of the enclosure is not a bad idea. Of course, it would void the warranty.

Ok. So I hooked it up to the comp directly by removing it from the case. This time, it does not register at all, even in the Slave/Master system area in boot. It did make sounds, however.

Then yes, its going to need to be examined by a pro. Even if it is just a PCB fault specialized tools are required to access the ROM.

I'm apparently local to you and would be happy to give an evaluation and quote.

Mmk, let's take this to PM. However, I may not be able to ask for the actual service until a few months down the road, if that's okay.
