Hi,
My maxtor hard drive pcb board's square chip caught on fire, and completely rendered the hdd usuable.

Is it safe to replace the pcb board?

Hi,

On this model you can use any M8FYB pcb.
But you can have damaged preamp as well wich is common on this model + this problem.
If your preamp is short, the new pcb will be gone too.

If your data is really important, i suggest to find a pro near you.
This problem can be cheap.

Best Regards,
Janos

Wow, that was a quick response :D.
How would I check if it had a damaged preamp. Last time it was on and on fire, I could hear the hard drive spin normally.

I should go to bed as I have a dmv written test early in the morning D:

how would u explain the fire
1. did the whole hdd burn
2. Just a crackn noise from the hdd due to a blow out on the pcb
3. Smoke coming from the pcb
4. Bad smell from the pcb.

which 1.

If it is totally burnt get the expert
If the pcb is out and the data in minor to u buy a new pcb
if the data is of high value get an eval from expert.
