I recently recieved a super sexy 16gb flash drive. It's super cool, and come on, 16gb in your hand is just amazing.

However, it is plagued with problems. Everytime I put a lot of information on the card (last time it was 4.3gb) it corrupts all of the files and renames them all really weird names, like that square character.

I have reformatted the drive through Windows multiple times, and the problem persists. Will using the Low-Level format utility help with this problem, or do I need to do something else.

Responses are greatly appeciated!

Are you sure you have a real 16GB drive? These are sometimes counterfited in China.

Windows recognizes it as a USB drive with 15.6GB of available space.

This is before and after manny formats, and just now after doing that Low Level format thing.

Did you get it from a reputable source? Is it a reputable brand? If so, is the model number mentioned on the manufacturer's website?

It's a generic brand kind of thing. Looks really nice. Got it off eBay, from some company in the States.

If it is a fake, how do I check? Is there a program I can use to view its actual storage capacity?

I don't have any firsthand experience with fake USB drives. Did you get a REALLY good price? It could also be that it's real (Although I don't think so at 16GB), but just defective. Either way, it seems a solution lies with the Ebay seller.

Hi,

It seems that it starts over from LBA0 when reaches the 4G limit. There can be several things:
the unit is damaged and cannot use the space above 4G,
the unit is a 4G pendrive hacked to show up as 16G.
I am not sure wether USB drivers can cause such things.

I just tested it and it doesn't seem to hold anything over 4gb, just like you said. Therefore, it must be hacked, right?

Now tat I'm over the fact that it is faked, is there any way to make it show up as the right size for future use?

Hi

No, I think U cannot easily modify the reported size.
U can modify the partition size to fit into the 4G limit instead.

Has this "fake" 16 GB issue resolved in the last one year or so, or does eBay still sell those?

I think I got one today, and the file corruption thing is happening. What do you suggest?
