Hi all!

I have a Seagate Momentus 120gb SATA in my laptop, that 2 month ago starts becoming really slow in loading programs.

a week ago, the drive didn't load windows xp, and since then the bios don't recognize it. I've connected it with an usb cable in an other machine, and I heard a low sound like tic-tic-tic.

I'm a photographer, and in that drive I have my last work, so it's important for me to have it.

Exist a method that permit me rescue the data? (please don't say "go to a DR company", I know that if I pay there's someone who does the work for me )

Why the most guru´s told´s u goes to a DR company, ? Because u need to know how to ..

1.- Send ATA commands, and ATA registers answers " Need it here knowledgment and experience" Most times need´s to Send " Special factory commands"
2.- Send Terminal Commands and check answer " Experience "
3.- Check media on a Clean Room " Experience to determine if media its good"
5.- Microscopic surface analysis. " Experience need it too"
4.- Did trasplants on a clean room. "Experience & tools and habilities need it here"
5.- Extract sectors by hardware control, " Expensive tools, and experience need it here"
6.- Verified data recovered " Same"

@beto: can you tell me the mission of a forum? For me, it's supply answers and knowledge to readers.

If the only answer is: "go to experts", we can close this forum and display this big message: "if you have problems with you drive, go to experts"

My refer in the first post was about this type of answers, that I would gently avoid.

If someone knows how to *try* to resolve my problem (and would be so kind to teach me) please come out.

You are only being told to "go to a pro" because it's a problem you cannot solve yourself with free tools.

Could you give me the phrase (italian) that say's "a pro should go to the pro".

Every pro loves to brag about thier work so I guess if I wanna do things by myself for example I would go to the mall to take my family pic this coming holidays. I would have a big blown up plactic of santa in my living room and just throw my kids/nephews/neices on it and take thier pics, and hope it comes out good.
Want I mean is a quote from Shakespear "To each man his own"

Here is what a pro might do : clicking, clicking, clicking drive after 2 months,
not recognise in the BIOS for one week, subjected to power on usb connector,
click, click, click ....

Step 1. Pro will check slightest chance that pcb can be the cause. (Eliminated)

Step 2. Pro will get permission from owner to open drive with estimate of cost to do the work.(Accepted)

Step 3. Pro will open drive and check electronics inside drive (HDA) - in Clean Room. (Eliminated)

Step 4. Pro will check media on top surface and check filter for signs of particles (Eliminated)

Step 5. Pro will check condition of R/W heads - as is and after removed (R/W heads faulty & clean)

Step 6. Pro will take good working matching set of head stack and replace original head stack.
(not working - drive still clicks, clicks) or Drive detects and all heads are reading just OK

Step 7. Pro has drive detecting, but knows that there was clicking, so he must be very cautious,
Because now data must now be pulled from working drive.

Step 8. Pro must be extra careful, because working donor heads, could just hit some media damage,
and bang ! all work is back to clicking drive.

Step 9. Pro now must consider to make image of drive (lots and lots of photos) and imaging must proceed
with full supervision (don't want to hit ambush).

Step 10. Imaging process proceeds with some stops and bad sectors (quite typical).

Step 11. Pro images working media sections, manually or with $4000.00 program assistance.

Step 12. After 4 to 10 hours of Step 9. to Step 11., drive is still working Pro has completed image
with about 90% of media copied to working drive. Finally drive clicks and clicks.

Step 13. Everlost gets some important photos.


The above could be a simple sequence in the event of success.

So you got no money, you got no programs, you got no matching donor, you got no experience.....

4 to 10 hours and 90% imaged. Thats a really cool good job done.
Without years of experience and knowledge it might be 4 to 10 seconds and 0%.

Ok everlost here is explanation why we said that cases need to send it to a "pro" a

1.- WD case arrive to us , another hands tried to did the data recovery, caused a lof dust, scratch´s and media damage to the surface the worst they exchange platters to another HDA,and reverse it to did the "data recovery" HDD¨s are piece of engineering no exchange parts.

2.- The second another case where another "experts" tried to recovery on a Fujitsu case, they kill the surface when take off and put the "good heads"

At u case if its not Mac, version, u could be the "typical" autoreallocation process selftest, wich is causing , not anwer to any command or answer slow, where needs to check on terminal, and u could get some like this

Here is it another worst case drccsc , a Seagate Chettah Case from a RAID 5, another "company" tried to did the "data recovery" and they did here a platter exchange on a case Seagate Chettah Size 0 wich looks was G list problem , the worst they broken the silica bag and all balls falls inside the hdd, but the worst was from a "so called professional company"

Im think there are good examples !
