I appreciate everybody's input and i'm glad I got the answer to my question. I just wanted to know for sure that this repair was beyond me and so I dont attempt it and ruin it even further.
As for the hacking part, I can see how it looks that way but there wasn't alot left for me to take away that wouldn't make it look like a hack job, the component did blow up from a power surge, so the area wouldn't look pretty to begin with. But i'm also not an expert solderer either, college just taught the basics!
I'm going to get a quote on pro DR. The 4000 plus family pictures and whatnot on that harddrive are too valuable to lose.
