Hello.
Ive got a WD400EB-00CPF0 that fails to detect or spin up.
The Flash memory chip rapidly gets hot.
Customer's PC power supply blew up, after replacement, drive failed to detect.

Details on drive:
WD400EB-00CPF0
21 FEB 2002
DSBAYV2A
PCB: 0000 001113-200F X W 1826 Z08H 4 00 03 34 0

I have tried to source a replacement PCB for this drive but the closest drive I can find is

1.
WD400BB-23DEA0
17 July 2003
DSBHNA2CA
PCB: 2061-001129-000GA XW 1938 3S9 A 0003030 4033

or
2.
WD400BB-23DEA0
09 Feb 2004
DSCHNA2CH
PCB: 2061-001129-000 GB XS 1951 3L7E 1 0004310 4314

Can I swap the boards from either of these drives to recover the data?

I suspect that these both are too different to hope to swap and recover the data, but I thought it was worth asking a more learned audience.

Alternatively, could I swap the m29f102bb chip?
Again, as it no doubt holds specific info for its drive, I suspect no, but still would like to know.

Alternatively, any other ideas...eg replacing the chip and reprogramming it, assuming I can get a good copy from an exact drive...although I might as well just swap the boards then...

Any help appreciated, and have a nice day.

Neither of your 2 donor boards would be good.
Find matching board and then swap that chip.

The pcb can be swapped without any significant disruption of the operation of the disk. All the information about the bad sectors of the drive are on the platters. Whether these PCB's are compatible. I also dont think these other PCB's would damage the platters if you just tried to swap them out, but I'm not sure, very probably . Depending on the value of the data I would advise getting some solid info on it, or sending it in to a pro.

Basically, if you just want to try and repair the drive, I would not worry about it and get a new drive. If you are looking to recover data, but cant afford to pay, or aren't very worried about it, I would try these other PCB's and keep looking for others. If you are very worried about recovering the data I would get this sent off to a professional recovery operation.

I don't think the ram is the problem here.

Thanks for your input.

@harddrivespecialist

Thanks, I suspected as such.
Guess I'm off to ebay...

@maux

Thanks for your advice, I dont really care about the data, but the customer does...:)
So I'll keep hunting.

@drccsc

Thanks also... Even though the chip is getting almost too hot to touch?
I realise it could be something damaged earlier in the circuit , allowing too much current to the m29f102bb ... but where to find it is the problem... So I guess getting the same drive and swapping boards is my only option.
Oh, and its not the onboard cache thats the hot chip, its the m29f102bb, just to clarify.

EDIT: oh, its not just that chip thats getting hot, so is the WD70C23-GP (ATA controller?)
SO you're right on the money there drccsc.

I'll keep hunting for a board.
Thank you all for your info and prompt responses.

The CPF0 model is pretty common so you should be able to find one OK.

I've 99.9% got one but the shipping to Oz would probably be prohibitive.
