ok so this drive decided to crap out on me and will not spin up or anything...from what i've read so far it could the pcb. i havent taken it off of the hard drive yet bc i dont have any star bits around at the moment. im more of a car guy and not a circuit board guy so im stepping in unknown waters here. you guys have an idea how i can get this thing spinning up to get my data off it?

Just replace the PCB with good one and resolder the ROM to the new PCB, and see what will happen. if your drive back to work again then you are lucky, if not then the preamp is gone too and you have to spend $$$$ to get your data.

ur gonna have to explain this one in a little plain english for me....where is the rom on the old one. and what is the preamp.

also is it possible to switch a pcb out without having to do the soldering? i've never been that great at it.

that just gets too expensive. the stuff on there is just personal stuff i would like to have, not stuff that is extremely important.

No, You will have to transfer ROM in order for your drive to work.
ROM chip has 8 legs and marked as U12.
If you ruin your ROM chip, it will cost a lot to restore it.

Preamp chip is inside a drive, if its fails, whole head stack has to be changed.

well i finally found my star bits and took the board out...looks like i found the problem...

looks like i found the problem, once its approved u can see the picture...

Your square chips is burned.
I can see darker color on a board.

yea thats the one thats burned. i posted a pic of the burn but it has to be approved before being posted..

so most likely this is the problem right? so all i need to do is order the new board and have someone swap the old rom (the box looking thing that sits in the u12 spot) over to the new board and put everything back together and it should work like it did....is that right?

the new board is on the way. just have to find someone around my area who can do the swap. i dont trust my solder skills enough to attempt it myself. any suggestions on places to attempt to take it to?
