Hi there,
i'm a little new to this kind of hdd problem. Some component of the board of my hdd apparently got too hot. I don't believe the actual data on the disk is damaged so I'd like to replace the board. As far as I read this could be done with an equal or almost equal board.
Can someone tell me if my assumptions above are correct and maybe explain what numbers i have to check to find another board that is suitable? Any special place to find a board?
Attached are some pics of the hdd. Actually it doesn't even say the model on top.

Your flash prevents me from reading it, but find a PCB with a label that matches the five alphanumeric characters under the barcode label on the right.

Sorry my camera didn't make sharp photos without the flash...
I assume you mean the barcode of the last picture. It says D4FAA. So that is the only thing that has to match?

The letters are D4FAA, so this you have to match...And from the look of the pcb it may be an Maxtor Maxline II hdd....(5A series).

I've been looking around ebay to find a pcb matching the D4FAA and found some.

1.
Locate the largest chip on your PCB board. (Circled red in the listing picture)
2.
On this chip, there should be a row of numbers that says 040111300.
3.
On the label side of the drive, near the bottom left hand side, there should be a line that says "Code: YAR41BW0".
4.
Make sure there is NO chip in the location of the yellow circle.
5.
The model number is located above the barcode on the bottom left of the label, it is the first 7 characters.
6.
If you have gotten to this step, then this PCB board is a match for your drive.

so is it really worth a try with a D4FAA match without more matching details? (just want to check..)

Your drive is(was) an 5A300P0xxxxxx model....You should search for a pcb from this type of drive(not 6Y080P0xxxxxx model)....And of course match D4FAA letters...Another big problem is that you don't know the "Code" of your drive. In your case should be RAMB1TV0 or RAMB1VV0.....If you don't match this "code" the drive will start clicking when put an incompatible pcb....

so how do you know it should be a 5A300P0... i mean why P0?

here they'd have similar PCBs, but its 5A300J0. + the D4FAA-style code isnt given. For the codes (RAMB1TV0 or RAMB1VV0) there's different ones.

hmhm thats not worth a try either than right?
So if the drive starts clicking is it then going to be dead or do I have more than one try if its just the code that doesn't match?

You'll also want to match the first 3 characters of the serial number.
I've not seen many of those drives, it could be quite tough finding a good match. Also that is one of the nastiest burnouts I've ever seen! What did you plug into it?

it was the regular power supply of an external hd case. And i actually have this case twice and am still able to switch the everything around, use the same power supply with the second hd case and another drive etc. Have no idea how this happened...

i guess I can pretty much forget about it... if im not lucky searching around

you got fake maxtor drive and matching pcb is not going to resolve that problem. PM for more details

Yes my fault....should be J0....If it starts clicking because of incompatible pcb you have a second chance, until you find an compatible pcb.....But it will going to be very difficult because, indeed ,is an refurbished drive....

the pcb you sent me worked.

I, however, have the impression that the same component on the pcb is slightly temperatured when i power the hdd up. Maybe it's just my imagination.. but is it possble that my hdd has some internal defect that causes this to heat up?

As it seems, i can read all the data, so i'll just try to copy it now first of all...

Try to back up everything that is important to you and do it often.

So, the replacement PCB I used in '09 worked until today.
Now I'm looking for a replacement again for the same drive

I attach a photo from the last PCB on the drive.
The one in the above photo was the original.

Anybody maybe have another replacement for me?
