I have
Model WD5000AAVS - 00ZTB0
DCM HBNNNT2CHB

I plug it in, it sounds like it spins up, but I get nothing. Every so often it just spins down by itself. No strange clicking noises or anything like that. When its spinning everything sounds great, and I can hear it doing some reads or something like that when first turned on.

I have a donor drive which is the following:
Model WD5000AAKB - 00YSA0
DCM HBRNHT2CBB

I am not sure if it can be used, but I am just saying I have this other drive.

How much will someone reputable charge me to fix this? Who is reputable? If my donor is good, then obviously they can have that, but if it isn't I would be wanting to know all inclusive as I don't feel like going drive hunting, would rather just someone fix.

Brian

I don't think these two can interchange... May be I'm wrong... It's just my educated guess

I also recommend jono-ats for this DR case. He's reputable and has vast experience to deal with WD drives.

Just one question to the OP, about your drive, is it from WD MyBook ?, or is it just bare drive ? I have seen many AAVS from MyBook recently sent in to my DR workshop, all giving same problem like you described.

I suspect something is really wrong with the design of WD MyBook if this is the case.....or everything is wrong with WD ? :D

Yes its from a mybook.

I hoped the mybook case was the problem, so I extracted the drive, and plugged it in using a USB->SATA cable and still no dice.

What seemed to be the problem with these mybook drives you worked on? I am sure its the same issue with this one.

We see a fair number of My Book drives. I think most of them have PCB problems, although some have bad heads. Corrosion seems to be a big factor . . . maybe the rubber pad has some reactive ions that make friends with the solder on the PCB.

Yeah, I've started to get a bunch of these AAVS drives in from MyBooks as well. A refreshing difference from what used to be in them (WD5000KS).

It is becoming increasingly hard to detect the real issue of these 500GB Western Digital. The chance to find a compatible donor is very low--To perform data recovery on these hard drives require extensive knowledge in firmware and head transplant--it is one of these horses we have to tame--

i don't want spend much, but if the price is reasonable, then i want to restore all of my pictures, software and music backups. I think it will cost me too much... 25€ send to UK, 100€ for new disk, 25€ to send data to me back + data restoration ?? €

A friend of mine gave me a WD5000AAVS making a click-click noise (but spinning normally) once powered up. She dropped it (was an external) while actually accessing it! :S
As I didnt manage to detect it even as hardware, I removed the cover to see that the 2 out of 4 heads were dead. One was actually broken and bent towards its pair head and then stuck together in the parking guide.

I have another WD5000AAVS. Can I swap the whole head unit?
