Hi,

I'm not familiar with the mechanical aspect of HDD's and am wondering how difficult it would be to fix my drive. I'm technical and low on money. Not sure how difficult it might be to do myself.

What happened is I had the drive plugged in and spinning (though idle not doing any read/write access). I went to move my laptop and the HDD aside and was careless w/ the HDD. It slid off my printer and fell about 6" to the carpet. Right after this I heard the spinning making a wobbly sound like the platters were out of balance or whatever. I right away unplugged power / USB before any read or write access was made.

I was hoping things would be okay, but a few days later I plugged the HDD in and right after power on I heard the wobbly sound. I right away unplugged power before read / write access. I haven't since plugged the drive in. Since the fall the drive has been on less than 10 seconds w/ no read or write access. I'm hoping the fact I haven't heard any scratching or clicking sounds indicates full recovery is likely.

Any input on what to expect is going on inside it and how it could be repaired?

Thanks

This is definetely not DIY, not to mention your experience with hdd. I suggest you to wait and save up until you can afford. If you can get a free inspection, do that with a pro and get a few quotes.

Most likely the spindle is either seized up and stuck together with the head, or worse the platters have scracthes all over it.

I'm hoping since I didn't hear scratching sounds they are okay. I guess I'll probably have to wait like you said. :(
