like many posts on here we have blue clicking on our hard drive. I've taken it out of the PC and put it into a usb drive caddy. Although it powers up - it clicks about 5 times then the hard drive powers off, and no notification comes up on the laptop at all regarding USB drive. when I goto manage drive in windows again not even coming up as damageds or unknown format.

At this stage is it completely dead as I can't use any utils to detect the hard drive at all. What are my options?

Your drive is completely dead now.
Only in special laboratory can resurrect.
If your data is important, don't force the drive to spin more, because the conditions gets more worse...
Seek for professional help, i suggest...

yes,

probably heads/preamp is gone. This alone is a reason to send the drive to a pro, but it being a WD actually requires some more skill than other brands.
U may contact PCImage for example, he is in the UK, or we are also able to help in this situation.

Like pepe and Janos say, almost certainly head related problem.

We are having good success in WD drives than many in UK, they are certainly more difficult to work with due to alignment issues. Assuming no serious platter damage then we can almost certainly recover for you.

WD as you know is the hardest drive to fix. Sucess rate on this drives is not very good. A special tool is needed and knowledge of the usage is required in order to perform this type of work. Recently I did one (WD10EAVS) with a nice circle on surface #0, at the SA... That one was the most tricky up till now, other surface damages are less problematic.
Of course not complete, but at least 70-80%... which is quite fair from such drive

WDs are hard as long as u don't have knowledge and tools, but I like them pretty much
