my documents folder did not get backedup. the reformat was a quick reformat of xp. I am tring to get back my hawx gamesave file. I know it seems stupid but I have never recovered anything so I just wanted to try.

I have used recuva and getdataback. I have just fallowed the basics with both programs.

I did just a little downloading before noticing the folder was not backedup, maybe about 30MB.

Any ideas would be great I have never done this successfully before and I wold realy like to learn how.

Do not work on your HDD. Back up the drive to another HDD. Then when this is done you can use a program such as getdata back for NTSF or FAT. Make sure which one you have. You can also use USF explorer to do this one with. If you do not find what you need then you might of over written this after format and reinstall of your programs.

I use "Recover my Files", and I am very satisfied with it.

If you have already installed new XP and then some onto that drive, it is likely that the data just is not there anymore.

Most of the data recovery programs have demo versions which allow you to either preview the files (like ours), or copy a somehow limited set of files (like many others) off the drive, so you can just try them in turn to see if one works. There is a wide variety of the software actually available, incl. R-Studio, GetDataBack, Stellar Phoenix, also Recuva and Recover My Files had already been mentioned. Just do a Google search for "data recovery software" or like that.

However, avoid installing the data recovery programs onto the disk containing the lost files.
