How did you arrive at that conclusion?

You've shown that 5V isn't getting to the drive, and you've shown that the 5V rail isn't shorted on the drive.

Just put the drive back together and set it aside until you get another enclosure. It's probably OK.

Obviously something is wrong with the USB-SATA bridge board. If I were troubleshooting it, it would only be for the intellectual satisfaction, not for any economic reason. I would start by locating the supply inputs and outputs. Then I would do a little circuit tracing. I would identify all the ICs, locate their datasheets, and study their application diagrams.

I would also find out what that pushbutton switch does. Is it a soft on/off switch?

Ok cool. That was an uneducated guess btw ... I'll get another enclosure or a new ex HD and try it out. If is ok I can always keep the old one as a back up. I'm probably going to have three back ups for everything from now on. Forever.damn it.

hi all just thought i'd report back and tell you the good news... i bought a new caddy from the local pc spares shop and plugged the hd into my laptop... a green light came on and i held my breath...all my files apeared on screen and i let out a whoop..i've been making backups of backups ever since.. thanks to all for the amazing advice, fzabkar, you are a legend mate..!!! i think this problem can be overcome quite easily by most with a bit of nouse, but not for the faint hearted.!! if in doubt send it to a recovery guy....
