Hi,

I have a SP1614C which is knocking at startup but reconnized correctly.

In windows I can see the files but when I try to copy files it start knocking and the computer hangs.

I tried to make a copy of the disk using Media Tools and can get some of the data as

Start LBA End LBA
0 - 9.969.680
14.000.000 - 26.700.000
31.000.000 - 45.395.000
50.000.000 - 67.000.000
.
.

As seen on table can read some data then cannot read about 4-5 million.
I gues the problem is related with one head since when it comes to end LBA the disk start knocking.

What do you think?

Thanks

Baha Cevik

Hi,

I agree, one head is defective, it is possible to copy the data (image) from the working surfaces, then replace the head assembly and copy the rest. For this U will need a smart imaging program like DE.
Or U replace the heads and see what comes from the drive afterwards.
Today I replaced heads in an SP0802 and the image came with only 4 errors. But 4 heads is a bit different.

regards,
pepe

0802 have only 2 heads.
This is really easy task for a skilled pro.

But if you don't know how to do it, then i think you have no cleanroom for do it.
If no, then your success is close to 0.

Too bad I found SP08x2 drives are somewhat sensitive for head alignment... This might lower the chances even more.

Yeah you are right. I don't have a clean room. How much does it cost if I let it do professional?

By the way:

Can anybody please explain me this text for searching a suitable donor from the text on http://hddguru.com/content/en/articles/ ... ck-Q-and-A

Quote:
Samsung

Forth character in the alphabetic code printed on the label at the rear side od the drive should match

- is this the tiny text on the sticker on the pcb side on the ide connector?
- Forth character from the left or right hand side?
- does the "+" in the table at "Country" means, it's important, that the drive is from the same country? How can I check for what country the drive was? Is there also a country code maybe somewhere on the drive? Or must only the forth character in the alphabetic code match?

Thanks a lot

Generally it depends on the platter's condition.
If there is no damage, the "standard" price in my lab for this drive with this problem is about 350 EUR.

OK. Thanks a lot for your information.

And you would recover all (recoverable) data for this price? How can I say what condition the platter is? Or can't I and only you :-D?

Thx

The price not depends on the data, only on the problem. ( = yes, all recoverable data)
You can't say the condition, only professional lab can diagnose it.
(In my lab the diagnose is free.)

This is only the recovery.
The client needs to send the hdd into my lab, and the price is counted from this point.
Additionally note, we are talking about SP0802x. ;)
I don't need to ship nothing, because i can put the data into my ftp server, and the client can download safely the data.
In this way i will have more parts, so i don't need to charge for it. :D

Anyway, can anybody tell me please, which a the criterias for finding a donor for this drive?

I don't get it...what "Forth character in the alphabetic code printed on the label at the rear side od the drive should match" is this? The sticker on the ide connector on the pcb side of the hdd? And is it the forth character from left or right hand side? Are the also futhur criterias that should match? Like country? If yes, where is the countrycode?

Thx a lot
