Tried to recover my Mac iBook hard drive and immediately after battery is not working properly (as if battery is missing). Has anyone experienced this previously?

What exactly did you do to "recover" your hard drive? Did you remove it? Have you removed the battery and re-seated it?

Of course. The more you had to disassemble, the higher the chances you've destroyed something.
Especially since you are asking as if you'd better not disassembled a computer...

It could just be coincidence. Swap out the battery with one that you know that works. If you get the same result, you know it is the system, not the battery.

This is a very common problem here on the islands. If your current is not stable this can happen quite often to laptop and batteries. I had one in that was working fine. AFter a few hours the system died. I had to pull the battery to get it to boot up again. Here I am not sure in other places this is quite common. I have a practice now with all laptop when using power to fix them with that I pull the battery before working. Normally for me I do not keep the battery on my laptop when using the power source to work with. If I need to use the laptop without the power source I charge the battery and replace it and then work with it this way.

Here I see that people buy laptop and keep them plugged into the power source all the time when using them. Then when the battery is needed on a power outage the battery does not work anylonger.

Battery in laptops should work fine 1-2 years. After that it's better to be replaced
If your battery is newer than 1 year - something is wrong otherwise you battery just died as many many others

I had a similar problem before. It turns out that the batter was just "worn out." Try replacing the battery.
