The drive shorted out on connector lots of burning smell

Can the pcb be replaced easily with one from a new drive without a chip change if not which chip needs changeing ?

PCB swap will NOT work on Toshiba HDD's as there is adaptive (drive specific data) on each pcb.

Modification work would be required, it has been discussed previously on this forum. Try the search box and you'll find more info.

This not needs any link.

In Toshiba, without the original and working pcb, you haven't got the reading adaptive parameters for recalibrate the drive nor the slip list.
Without these the recovery is extremely hard.

What has it been connected to? 12V? IDC plug wrong way round?

I can't see exactly what happened, but it could be that the IDC pins were making poor contact, in which case the current may have cooked the connector due to ohmic heating in the high resistance joint.

Alternatively, you may have overvolted the PCB, in which case the TVS (?) diode D1 may have short circuited and caused an excessive current to flow. However, I would have expected fuse (?) F1 to go open in such a case. If you have a multimeter, set it to the 200 ohms range and measure the resistances of F1 and D1. If D1 is short circuit, remove it. If F1 is open circuit, bridge it with a wire link, or replace it with a picofuse (3A ?). Just be sure your power supply is OK because doing the above will leave your drive without protection. If you want to replace the diode, you can use an SMAJ5.0A from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.

If you decide that you would rather replace the whole board, then you will need to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip at IC12 (?) from patient to donor. Before you do so, confirm the part number under the paper label.

BTW, I'm not experienced in DR, so I'm seeing your PCB for the first time. The pros will tell you to search this forum for answers, but what little specific information there is, is often impossible to find. Most of the posts look like they've been hacked out in SMS-ese on a mobile phone keypad, so from that point of view they are worthless.

I think the IDC plug may have been connected wrong eg pin 41 to 43
and pin 42 to 44 but not sure pin 44 or 43 was black & lose .

I don't see any burnt components apart from the connector... u can check fuses on the PCB
to replace the pcb u need to swap rom (IC12)

I may wait for a replacement hard drive/pcb, which numbers have to match for a sucessful transplant of EEPROM chip at IC12?

How much would a Pro charge to recover data from this drive and how long would it take? This could be a viable alternative if all else fails.

I'm not experienced in data recovery, so that question would best be answered by a professional.

One other thing I would check would be whether the end pins are still making contact with the circuit board, especially the loose one. It may just be a matter of resoldering it.

I have been offered toshiba MK4025GAS HDD 2190 B ZE01 T and MK4025GAS HDD2190 C ZE01 S, which one would be the better match for EEPROM chip IC12 swap ? Can the donor eeprom be reprogrammed in situ and at what cost ?

Why the rolling eyes ? Just wanted to confirm the donor drive codes and component markings. The components are very small, in some cases smaller than letter markings on pcb.

I am familiar with larger electronic components but this is first time on 2.5'' drive so am a newbie.
