Hi guys i have two WD drives both 80GB and very similar PCB model numbers.... i dont have the model numbers as i am away on training
i swopped the PCB and the 80GB drive showed up in the BIOS as 6GB..... what im wondering is.... if i did the DR Technique where i connected Drive #1 to the computer let it detect in the bois as 80GB then booted into windows and let the drive go to sleep and then swopped the PCB to Drive #2 and then wake the drive up do you guys think i would be able to pull an 80GB image off DRIVE #2.

there is no real critical data on it im just trying this to see if it can be done or not...

any ideas???

You need to change ROM , you can search the forum for more info .

Rameez, he wants to do a hotswap.
Unless he can read the SA and rewrite the neccessary modules to the other drive there is no possibility to read data.
Even rom change wont help for that.

so my question then is what would be the best way to recover data from a drive with a faulty PCB.....

1. Locate and purchase new identical PCB
2. Remove rom from old PCB and solder onto new PCB

???
i heard there is some 4k hardware that will read data off a clickin hdd any one can validate this while we at it?

He did not change ROM after he change pcb so that is why it shows 6gb .

That's probably the most expedient way for the average person, assuming the EEPROM is external to the MCU. Another way is to read the original EEPROM and reprogram the donor, but that requires a device programmer.

Hi Guys

came back from overseas tonight and i checked the 80GB drives and lo and behold both PCB's are identical in model number 2060-701335-005 REV A how ever the little white sticker on the PCB differ... one is 2061-701335 E00 AC and the other is 2061-701335 E00 AF...

Now i guessing this is where the swopping or the ROM chip becomes so important... Like Rameez said above...
