Hello all,

I am sure everyone is familiar with the firmware issue afflicting the seagate 7200.11 series drives. But I have an interesting case. This drive is showing symptoms of the Always BSY bug, but standard procedures are not working, and I can't seem to find a workaround. Here is the terminal log:

LED:000000CC FAddr:0024900D

LED:000000CC FAddr:0024900D

F3 T>/2

F3 2>Z

Spin Down Complete
Elapsed Time 0.156 msecs
F3 2>U

LED:000000CC FAddr:0024900D

LED:000000CC FAddr:0024900D

Obviously in between command Z and U I am performing the proper "procedure" but The drive acts as if that never took place. This is the first time i have worked with a drive with the HP24 firmware, so obviously there must be some "extra step" that needs to be taken here. I was wondering if anyone had discovered the workaround for this drive.

Pardon the silly question : was the PCB isolated from the drive between steps 1 and 2? (It should be.)

Instead of only spindle connector isolation, complete PCB removal was needed. Everything else afterwards is "as normal"

firmware HP24 does not allow terminal access after reconnection of PCB to HDA.

It does, but you've got to do it slightly differently.

I did one this week :-)

There two methods of disconnecting pcb.
motor connectors as per ace and pcb to hda as per aviko and others.
Also there's method of shorting two pins without pcb disconnect.

In this case disconnect pcb to hda, power up, and only AFTER
motor stops spinning, do CTRL Z, then follow typical procedure.

besides, use standard terminal program like in windows, works better than ace
and it's free. I get lots of 7200.11 from ace udma owners, cause they don't want
to use terminal

I have ace UDMA and standalone RS232 connection for Terminal. I agree, some cases basic terminal from PC is just as good, if not in some cases more reliable.

Just in case you don't check PM's, I'd appreciate knowing the "differences" between accessing the HP24 vs. the SD15 flashed drives...

Thanks!

I too have the same problem with the terminal baud rate issue on an HP24 FW drive. Could you help?

True, but since I already have a replacement drive coming from Newegg, this is more or less a, "so what if it bricks - it's already a doorstop" attempt.

Not in open forum I won't no, nor to "newbies" with no DR experience.

Sorry if that sounds harsh or "keeping secrets" but I don't want to be held responsble for people bricking their drives irrepairably.

No offence is meant or intended.

Can you PM me? The HDD is dead to me as of right now. I'm trying to recover it.
