Computer repair tech here looking to get more into the hard drive recovery side of things. I have a spare drive which is faulty (no sound whatsoever when plugged in). From what I read, this is likely a PCB issue.

I am looking for a replacement PCB according to the PCB number (2061-771672-F04). eBay has a few but it looks like they are from slightly different models (mine is a WD5000BEVT).

If I were to purchase a PCB with the same PCB number, but for, say, a WD50005000PVT instead, could I just swap the rom chip? Thank you!

You need to buy a PCB from same drive model, or else from same family if you can identify it.

What would qualify as same family?

What is the drive full model?

I forget the guys name, but I remember watching a video series that said I should come within about 2 (weeks?) of the date on the drive, and there was something about needing the 5th or 6th correct of the DCM code to be the same. Does that sound right?

You may refer to Scoot Moulton.

But in this case what he said does not apply, as he's refering to heads swap on that video.

I just happened to get another hard drive (this one is for a customer) that doesn't make any noise when connected, so I assume it also needs a pcb swap.

What do you guys usually search for when trying to find a similar pcb?

To make sure I'm understanding correctly. Please let me know if this situation works:

I have a WD5000BEVT-24A0RT0 (for example!)

I need to swap the pcb and lets say my pcb is 2061-771672-F04 AA

So I go on ebay and search for 2061-771672-F04.

Let's say I find that PCB but it came from a WD5000BEVT-55A0RTO.

they are from the same family, so as long as I swap the bios chip, I'm ok?
