Hi everyone,I need some help salvaging important photos from a recent shoot.
My Sony a7 III suffered a simultaneous dual-card write error, causing files on both memory cards to become corrupted at the exact same time. Here are the technical details:Camera: Sony a7 III (shooting stills)File Status:
The files are visible on my Mac and show a healthy file size of approximately 49MB each, meaning the underlying pixel data should be intact.Error Messages: The camera displays "image cannot be displayed". Sony Imaging Edge Desktop throws an error stating "media files cannot be processed because their formats are not supported."
Adobe Lightroom states "no preview available."What I've Tried:Ran the built-in "Recover Image DB" tool in the Sony camera menu (reported "no errors found").Attempted extraction via browser-based tools, but received a "could not decode" error, suggesting the file header or embedded JPEG preview is entirely corrupted or filled with invalid data.Changing extensions manually did not work.
I have safely removed the SD cards and set the physical write-protect switches to LOCK to prevent any data overwriting.Because consumer software is failing to recognize the file structure, I suspect the camera crashed mid-write, leaving the file headers completely broken or zeroed out while the raw image payload remains behind it.I have a healthy, working 49MB sample RAW file from the same camera to use as a reference structure.
If any data recovery technician is willing to look at the hex structure, I can upload one corrupted file and the healthy reference file to a Google Drive link.Any advice on automated tools, hex-editing scripts, or manual reconstruction methods to salvage these would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
