Hi guys and gals

As promised im giving you an update on my PCB and ROM swop

and im happy to say i successfully completed my first DR experiment...
things learnt...

1. You must be VERRRRRRRY patient with the ROM desolder and Resoldering process, Clean up during and after your work...
2. rameez... you do not need the last 3 digits for the WD Drives i was working on.. As long as the first 10 digits match you are good to go... well thats what i read online neways....
eg My orginal PCB was 2061-701335-E00 AC / 2060-701335-005 REV A
my Donor PCB was 2061-701335-E00 AF / 2060-701335-003 REV B

Steps in this process was:
1. Locate and unsolder ROM chips from both DONOR and FAULTY PCB's
2. Solder ROM to DONOR PCB
3. Clone drive using Media Tools Pro
4. Write image to known working 500GB drive
5. Connected drive to working PC and checked data

if there is anything else i should have done here please let me know as im a NEWBIE.. to DR

In these drives the last 3 digits do matter so you need to find the exact pcb .

do you know what's the difference during 003 and 005? 8)

You're very lucky doing it this way ,and not frying the chip.

Normally you should have used SMD temperature controlled soldering/desoldering device together with the paste. :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7j6U_dwM3M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9PgwMzrk2g

Here are some very nice guides on SMD soldering :
http://www.infidigm.net/articles/solder/
http://www.avrfreaks.net/modules/Freaks ... 0Guide.pdf (see for the trick with wire)

Hot air guide with 175$ station : http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/tutori ... ials_id=36

If you have money to spent, you might consider one of these (Weller) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjKPzYvcD5I (that's were I learned it on)

Take any old print board, and exercise first on it.
Then perform the real deal.

The trick that you should apply to pull this off ,is to be as possible so that the internal circuitry in the chip isn't heated up for a long time.
The longer you heat it up at soldering temperature, the more chance on damage.
Needless to say that grounding during soldering is IMPERATIVE.

Kind regards,

K.

Well ,
You Should Practise With Soldering And Desoldering Skills a Lot you Need To Learn a Lot ,this Is Not a Good Job At Soldering

Flux Pen + Solder Wick and a Flux cleaner would have made your life easier. Of course some solder to finish the job :O)

Looks like you used a blow torch and hammer 8oP

@guru hehhehe you live and you learn... that was my first.. well second attempt...and you are correct i dint have the correct tools...... the 3rd will be much cleaner just ordered a SMD Hot Air Rework Station 952 Welding Soldering Iron a flux pen and solder paste :D so next job will be clean as a whistle :)

Im pretty certain a pro recovery would have been more suited considering the time and money your spending !

Good on you mate. Im scared to look at the price of one of those things..
But you cant go wrong with Weller, my dad used a weller soldering iron and trasnformer(anolog) and now im using it today.. its like 20+ years old and still works perfect - few tip changes obviously :P

Good luck with your next project :)

Weller soldering iron or whatever brand is insufficient for desoldering. Hot air / infrared and tools and chemicals and a lot of practice are needed NOWADAYS.
For soldering, depending on how good you are, you can use everything you want.
