Fried the drive......again.

Last time I just popped off the TVS diode and life was good for data recovery.

Anyone know where it is on this one?

Can you please clarify "test them".

I have a Fluke Digital Multimeter (auto range); should I just set it to resistance mode and check for a dead short? Or use the continuity checker that beeps of shorted?

Thanks

Thanks for the cryptic answer. You couldn't just post a couple of simple instructions specific to testing the diodes on-board on a Harddrive here?

Before you guys go "randomly" probing about for "diodes" be aware that some cheap multi testers use a 9v battery.

so if you have your multi-tester set to "sounder", there is a possibility you can damage some of the Cmos inputs for some chips if you reverse bias the substrate of the device.

In English :
You can seriously shorten the life of some chips , by using the wrong analysis protocols
and please ALWAYS remember you anti-static wrist strap with integral resistor and grounding wire.
(notice that all these "pro" disk repair kits do not come with a cheap reusable $3.00 antistatic wrist band)

Remember safe repair is like safe sex: always wear the correct protection.

No, you wouldn't learn anything by me telling you how to test a simple diode.

What is the open circuit voltage and short circuit current of a cheap multimeter?

You don't check a diode with Ohm Meter, check it with a Diode tester option.
