You moved the rom from the old pcb to the new pcb and it did not resolve the issue. This rules out that it's a pcb issue. You have a damaged Preamplifier and changing U7 is not going to help.

da kannst du leider nicht viel machen, viel glück!!!

The preamp is not broken. The motor spins when I change the PCB. Also with changing the ROM from the broken PCB to the new one, the motor spins.
It just makes clicking noises.

So my guess is that the new board is not 100% compatible. And I hope that the U7 chip, which controls the motor, doesn't have any specific data stored on it, which would make a U7 swap successful.

I just wonder if anybody ever tried that..

I second modo. It's funny how someone with no experience can claim "The preamp is not broken" when that is the concensus thus far by people in the know.

@Modo - Pre amp has nothing todo with the motor.
The chip you are trying to repalce is a phase controller for the stepping motor- This is not connected to the heads but might return data for rpm from motor- depends on spec sheet of IC. What causeds this type of blow out can be a bad transistor!and sometimes other diodes sonnected to it.BUT WHY is another question. if you replace this chip it wil blow AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN! You need to trace WHY its blowing.
The original baord has an issue somewhere- the fact that the repalcement baord spins the motor up is ok. And if you replaced the rom too and it does not read- then you will have an issue with the heads inside the drive - caused by the same surge that blew your motor chip. Because it cannot read the SA and cannot INIT the drive.
Dont open your drive if you want your data. You did as much as you could man. Take the gurus advice and save up. Sorry mate.

Thank you for that information!
I will give up now :-/

Sorry for trying to be smart a.s
I thought pre amp is the motor.

Alright then. A pro would open the Hdd and replace the entire head, and the pcb right?
Don't worry, I won't do that.

I think my conclusion is to save up, and probably never buy a WD again. Which is sad.
unfortunately one wd hdd has warranty until 2012.. so I get two years at the max.

WD Seagate Samsung or whatsoever is the same - they fail. Especially if you have cheap power supply. Or experience electrical failure from mains (can happen anytime anyway).

So far I found out that the WD are the hardest to get rescued. That's why.

Years ago i would recommend seagate- im talking when they still had 5 year warranty- and they actually lasted 10 years before getting any bads. The oldest working HDD i have is a 700MB Seagate and still boots a linux distro on there. Its about 12 years old.
Now all i can recommend is save your photos to the internet. Picasaweb and Dropbox! Your data is replicated at least 3 times on the servers and it costs you pennies(picasa 10$ 20gb a year) dropbox a bit more but is great solution.
Even raid solutions can be a massive hassle.Flash drives just fail, cd's deteriorate.
The worst HDD's in my opinion are Fujitsu.. stay away!
The other day i bought a Samsung S2 500GB usb- used it once- stopped working; replaced it- used it once stopped again- third one i have is working ok now.. for how long. Not my hardware i use several other usb devices and drives.
Hope you get your data back at end of day.
