If you replace pcb by another pcb, even if it's not totally compatible, what do you get?

I have find hard 20 gbfrom the same family:

Hitachi DK23EB-20
20 GB , 5400 rpm....

and put that pcb on my hdd
and my hdd is recognized
everywhere ( bios and win)

like Hitachi DK23EB-20 and in windows is visible only 20 gb capacity (~ 39 000 000 LBA),
instead 40 gb and ~ 78 000 000 LBA .

shortly my disk is recognised with half capacity and could not get data from him.

Also it is interesting in that series of hdd :

serial number of hdd is written somewhere on pcb
that my hdd ( 40gb ) with that other pcb exept lower capacity
give and ser. no of donor ( 20gb )hdd.

well , i am shure that my disk is mehanically fully ok
but it need the PCB from the same capacity hdd ( 40 GB)....

You should transplant ARM chip from your bad board to the donor.

It's a CPU with masked ROM.

Does the drive spin up?

BTW, the "adaptive" data appear to be in the Marvell MCU (big "M").

If the drive spins up with the original PCB, then the problem is most likely not with the board. Otherwise, if it doesn't spin up with the original PCB, but spins up with the replacement, then the chip swap should work. However, you will have a hard time finding a shop that has the necessary smt rework equipment to do this job for you.

The following URLs should help you identify some of the other chips:

hello fzabkar

thanks for your answer again.
your info was very good, but:
the layout u sent is for wdxxx drive.
do u have a layout of hitachi's dk23eb-40?. i was strating to look in the last two links and didn't find.
there might be aome similarities but i don't like to take risks.

-u didn't answer this question--> it's a big chip this marvell. can it be replaced. do u know how?

tks a lot again

You need something like this:
http://www.google.com/images?q=%22smt+r ... 22+station

I don't have any schematics for your drive. If I were troubleshooting it, I would trace the DC-DC converter circuits, and use some basic electronic troubleshooting principles. That's why I directed you to the WD and Seagate URLs.

BTW, I'm not a data recovery professional. I'm only following Starling's advice.

That said, I'm wondering whether the smaller of the two square chips is an EPROM or flash memory. Can you tell us the part numbers on the 4 biggest chips? Your photo doesn't help at all. :-(

To avoid a lot of frustration :

1) "clairvoyance" doesn't help - proper diagnose with the right tools does.
2) most likely the problem is FW/heads on this series. See 1)
3) to confirm point 2) : check if drive spin up and does at least partial calibration , but the drive should not click. If clicking, 99% is internal problem.
4) at this point, if you don't have a HW or proprietary diagnostic tool to access FW and proceed with further analysis, is GAME OVER.
5) As the drive is old and this series had some "peculiarities", take into account the possibility of media damage too (5-10% in my opinion).

The possibility of MALFUNCTION of the PCB is low but also can be. It can be pinpointed in short time with the right tools.

You haven't answered my questions.

Does the drive spin up with the original board?

What are the numbers on the 4 big chips?
