Hello !

I have a Hitachi 160gb that been sitting in my Archos 504, unfortunately it broke down, so i took the hdd and put it in a box, i then connected it to my windows7 desktop to use! now W7 say "windows was unable to complete the format"

is there any way i can still format it so i can use it again??

I got the prg and did the Verify!! it say its finished!! but nothing ells sems to happend!!

mind there is nothing on it that i need to recover or keep!!!

Ok? Did you look at the map- were there any RED blocks?

All i can recommend now is to use the Erase tool

Erase your hard drive then Scan it Again with Verify. And make sure to check the MAP for any coloured blocks especially for red.

Hi again!!

its wiping it now!! seems to be incredibly slow!! (started at 11:30 and only 5 blue bars on the counter!!)

What is the MAP you are mentioning?

Is the program really reporting a "Xitishi HTC549696J9IT80" or is this a typo ?
If it is real, then there is something wrong. Perhaps bad contact or bad cable.
If after checking cable you still got this, then its the drive itself that is bad.

It appears that the errors occur in bits 12 and 3, or bits 4 and 11, depending on the endianness. So it does look like a cabling or interface issue.

In fact the suspect bits are adjacent to each other in the cable (Data 3, 4, 11, 12):

My 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter is like that. Have to get it aligned perfectly or it does the exact same thing, same bits. Better to use a laptop to test it... although, it is better to use the adapter first to see if an unknown drive spins up correctly in an old desktop computer first, as cheap insurance.

I say this because I once had a Toshiba laptop drive fry my IDE controller on a laptop. Luckily it was an only an ancient Compaq Presario K62-300 missing parts that I used only as a testbed.

Good source for cheap testbeds, just be sure it isn't a difficult "This laptop is protected by a password" disabling session. Some laptop passwords are almost impossible to remove.
