Hi all

I have a problem with my hard drive not being recognised by computers, when connected to a pc it is not detected by the bios and the bios takes a long time to progress / freezes, I have tried of a few computers and get the same result

The drive seams to power up ok and spin up for a few seconds then spins down and stops

I think maybe I can recover the data by replacing the PCB

The details are

pn 9hh134-567
fw 0002bsm1

pcb 100536284 g2 e009fu3e

http://i41.tinypic.com/2irn2pd.jpg

Which component on the board is the fuse the white one with 8g on it in green?

Thanks

It's not the PCB, it's the heads.

99.9% sure you are barking up the wrong tree I'm afraid :-(

If the drive spins up, then the fuse, if one exists, must be intact. The TVS diode must also be OK. In fact I can't see any fuse -- the 5V TVS diode appears to be directly connected across the supply. FYI, the TVS diode is the horizontal device under the SATA power connector, with a "v" on the PCB indicating the cathode (striped end).

The white device is a shock sensor. It is mounted at 45 degress on order to sense vibration in both horizontal axes.

If you insist on trying a new PCB, then you will need to transplant the 8-pin serial flash memory chip at the bottom right corner from patient to donor. This chip stores unique, drive specific information.

The drive is picking up it's serial number from the PCB, this series have the s/n programmed into it. This is why Frank is saying you have to move the ROM chip when you change the PCB, which he is perfectly correct in.

But IMHO this would be a fruitless mission, as it's almost definitely a heads related issue and requires a head change in a cleanroom environment. Also, these series of drives are very fussy when it comes to head compatibility.

By all means give it a go, but if you do mess up that ROM you'll virtually ruin ALL chances of recovery.

Sorry to appear so pessimistic, but it's the case for this drive :-(

Ok so I can forget the idea of replacing the PCB as it is 99% not the problem

I have made a sound recording of the drive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oppChpij1Y

Working on the heads is not going to be something I can do from the sounds of it, what other options are there?

Will putting it in the freezer for 24 hours give me enough time to get the data off?

Thanks

No, you have to keep it in the freezer for at least 25 hours.

I've never had any help with less than 48 hours, but you have to tap it genitally on it side on that specific semi-hourly interval to get the full effect.

EDIT: (Feeling guilty, please do not attempt my B.S.'d attempts)

If you have the data recovery spray, you can cut the freezer time in half.

Seriously, though. If your data is important to you, send it to a professional before it is completely unrecoverable. Every time you power on the device, you could be causing severe damage to the drive's surface.

As for the freezer, it will only help make things worse.
