Hi,
i've got a problem with a (refurbished) WD600AB.
Drive doesn't get detected in BIOS unless i'm forcing the BIOS to scan the channel (But even after saving, it's still not accessible because of the reboot aber saving changes).
The BIOS waits a long time if it tries to auto-detect. In MHDD, the drive's reaction is rather slow (i think thats why ist doesn't always respond to RST)
Examples:
Code:
MHDD>id
WDC WD600AB-00CBA1 LBA:117,231,408
SN:WD-WMAA61121342 FW:04.07B04 CACHE:2048KB Size = 57241MB
To see enhanced information, use command EID <SHIFT+F2>
Init drive: [RESET]
! ERROR: Drive not responding or operation canceled
[RECAL]
! ERROR: Drive not responding or operation canceled
Drive is not ready.
MHDD>eid
WDC WD600AB-00CBA1 LBA:117,231,408
SN:WD-WMAA61121342 FW:04.07B04 CACHE:2048KB
Supports: HPA AAM DLMC LBA MS16 DMA (UDMA5,MWDMA2)
SMART: Disabled SelfTest: Supported ErrorLog: Supported
Security: high, OFF. Size = 57241MB
MHDD>smart on
þ Smart -> ON
SMART Enable Operations
! ERROR CODE:255
If i'm starting to scan, every shown block is S (for IDNF. Didn't let the whole disk scan, only first 200'000-300'000 sectors).
Reading the forum since almost three month and being interested in harddisks for a long time in general it's been relative easy to identify hdd-errors, but on this one, i really don't know (hadn't had such a problem up until now). From my "newby"-point-of-view, i think it's a firmware or head-problem.
Could somebody help me and could say whats wrong?
Data is not important, this is just out of interest, but i lack the money to buy i.e. pc3k and having just begun to look into ways of getting terminal-access to drives, i doesn't have the possibility yet to see what this drive shows in terminal.
Hope i don't sound like a script-kiddy or something like that, that just want's it's hdd repaired, but i'm really interested in these kind of problems. Btw i already think, even if someone could get this drive working again, which most of you would i think

, it would just be to rescue data, so i just want to understand what's this drives problem, nothing more.
If somebody is kind enough to tell me what could it be, i'd be really thankful, 'cause as you know, it's hard to find detailed information on the net.
Best regards,
Zuujin
