Hi,
i've got a problem with a (refurbished) WD600AB.
Drive doesn't get detected in BIOS unless i'm forcing the BIOS to scan the channel (But even after saving, it's still not accessible because of the reboot aber saving changes).
The BIOS waits a long time if it tries to auto-detect. In MHDD, the drive's reaction is rather slow (i think thats why ist doesn't always respond to RST)
Examples:
Code:
MHDD>id
WDC WD600AB-00CBA1  LBA:117,231,408
SN:WD-WMAA61121342   FW:04.07B04   CACHE:2048KB   Size = 57241MB
To see enhanced information, use command EID <SHIFT+F2>
Init drive: [RESET]
! ERROR: Drive not responding or operation canceled
[RECAL]
! ERROR: Drive not responding or operation canceled

Drive is not ready.

MHDD>eid
WDC WD600AB-00CBA1  LBA:117,231,408
SN:WD-WMAA61121342   FW:04.07B04   CACHE:2048KB
Supports: HPA AAM DLMC LBA MS16 DMA (UDMA5,MWDMA2)
SMART: Disabled SelfTest: Supported ErrorLog: Supported
Security: high, OFF. Size = 57241MB
MHDD>smart on

þ Smart -> ON
SMART Enable Operations
! ERROR CODE:255

If i'm starting to scan, every shown block is S (for IDNF. Didn't let the whole disk scan, only first 200'000-300'000 sectors).

Reading the forum since almost three month and being interested in harddisks for a long time in general it's been relative easy to identify hdd-errors, but on this one, i really don't know (hadn't had such a problem up until now). From my "newby"-point-of-view, i think it's a firmware or head-problem.
Could somebody help me and could say whats wrong?
Data is not important, this is just out of interest, but i lack the money to buy i.e. pc3k and having just begun to look into ways of getting terminal-access to drives, i doesn't have the possibility yet to see what this drive shows in terminal.

Hope i don't sound like a script-kiddy or something like that, that just want's it's hdd repaired, but i'm really interested in these kind of problems. Btw i already think, even if someone could get this drive working again, which most of you would i think  , it would just be to rescue data, so i just want to understand what's this drives problem, nothing more.

If somebody is kind enough to tell me what could it be, i'd be really thankful, 'cause as you know, it's hard to find detailed information on the net.

Best regards,
Zuujin

If you're getting errors when turning on/off SMART then problem is most likely bad SMART modules and/or translator modules.

Hi scratchy,
thanks for your reply :)
If it's bad SMART modules only, why do it get IDNF on trying to read from it? Is it more likely that several modules got corrupted? What would a pro do at this point? Safe mode to get working modules to the drive or a different approach, maybe checking drives modules first?

Best regards,
Zuujin

What have you tried to do previously if anything i have had these drives like that but have been different problems. I have had pcb trouble causing it along with heads and firmware so you need to narrow it down a bit.

Do you have access to PC3000 to check modules 20 and 25? Could be related to translator.

Is data important on this disk, or do you simply want it repaired?

First thank you all for helping me :)

As i said in my first post, data isn't important (nice to have, but definitely not important).
hddguy wrote:

I would jump around so happy would i be if i could get near a pc3000, but i'm "only" in apprenticeship to get the title of something like an "IT specialist" (in german: Fach-Informatiker für Systemintegration).
But the log of chk_wd gives a few information also (see attachement).
macman wrote:

A colleague tried to boot from the drive several times, i.e. by rescanning for drives in BIOS so it would detect the drive. I directly booted to mhdd after that.

They are attached, thanks for the link to this nice tool.

I really appreciate all your help. I thought there wouldn't be that much anwers as it's more "just for information and learning by doing" than a possibility to get a costumer.

Best regards,
Zuujin

Translator fault. In short, the disk is unable to complete the conversion between CHS and LBA ( Its a little more complicated than that, but this is the simplest way I have to explain it!!)

This disk can not be repaired or recovered without specialist equipment. Fortunately it seems that data is not important to you so maybe you should cut your losses with it. If you do need the data, you need to consult a specialist.

Translator is broken. It gives MHDD 4.5 with written script to repair translator
To start script which will repair translator we have to write:.wdctrans

Hi,
sorry for replying that late. Thanks to the script Nirvanowiec provided the drive is able to be read within mhdd's scan for example, means it is now possible to read data :) Many thanks for that! In addition, the script and the whole problem itself gave me a lot to dig into and learn from. (Atm i'm building one of those com-adapters to get terminal access to seagate drives to get behind the normal operations of an hdd, how to fill registers and that stuff :) )

I'll report if i get all the data from that drive safely.

Best regards and thanks again,
Zuujin

Sorry to pull up such an old post, but I have a kind question about Chk_WD.zip

Is that tool valid also with SATA WD drives? Right after, the question turns on MHDD's scripts.. how many of such nice scripts are available for MHDD?

Thank you for the answers, if any :)

Cor

Issue has already been resolved. Why would they need more scripts?

Don't ask me, ask Corsari.

Here is an interesting open source project that utilises WD's vendor specific ATA commands to set the "idle3 timer":
http://idle3-tools.sourceforge.net

You should be able to write your own MHDD scripts using the supplied information.
