I accidentally plugged in my laptop's adapter to my seagate external desk storage which has 19v. The original adapter is only 12 v=2A. The item is still under warranty but I'm afraid they will just pull out the item and replace it with new one. I even tried to plugged it in my computer using sata cable but my pc doesn't detect it anymore. I have lots of files there it's almost 1tb of important files. Please help me!

The usual result is a shorted 12V TVS diode, in which case there is a simple, zero-cost DIY fix. There is nothing tricky about it, except maybe in finding a way to get inside the enclosure.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

If you need help in locating the diode, please upload a detailed photo of the USB-SATA bridge board inside the enclosure. We would also need to see the component side of the board on the HDD.

I've seen this same problem in many different storage forums.

Lots of success stories ...

Your TVS diode questions are answered in my FAQ article.

Questions regarding cost will no doubt be answered via PM. However, a replacement board plus firmware transfer should cost around US$50, if your board supplier does it for you.

should I open now and void my warranty? do you think seagate will not know it? does varying hdd model matters when replacing diodes or do I need exact same model? should I wear gloves before opening it?
