Hi All,

A few days ago, I purchased a brand new Seagate ST2000DM001 2TB/64MB 7200 (SN: S24*****) to be used as a data storage disk.

My problem is that this HDD is detected by BIOS when I plug it into a SATA 3 port but it is not detected by BIOS when I plug it into a SATA 2 port. This appears very strange to me as I know SATA 3 HDDs are backward compatible and my other SATA 3 HDDs worked fine when plugged into SATA 2 or SATA 3 ports.

My system configuration are:

- MB: ASUS P7H55-M/USB3
- BIOS: Version 1105 (latest)
- Marvel Controller: 1045 (latest)
- OS: Windows 7 Home

My troubleshooting so far are:

- Re-formatted it several times when plugged into SATA 3 port but BIOS still cannot detect this HDD when it is plugged into SATA 2 port. This is tedious as each format takes 5-6 hours!
- Check for latest firmware from Seagate but there isn't any yet.
- I don't have a spare PC to check this HDD at the moment.

Could this be due to its 2TB capacity that my MB cannot detect on SATA 2 port? I want to make sure it is not a hardware problem as it is only a few days old.

Any help appreciated, thanks so much!

Is the SATA 2 port enabled in BIOS?

Hi there,

Yes, all my six SATA 2 ports are fine and working as I checked all of them previously using a good HDD.

How is the good HDD different than the one that is not working?

Hi labtech,

My good HDDs are WDC 500GB and WDC 1TB. My problem HDD is Seagate Barricuda 2TB.

What is the exact procedure you're using to format the drive? 6 hours is a very long time, even if you are using low level format tools, and that maybe indicates some h/w problem with the drive. Did you check SMART?

hi northwind,

i totally agree that my format period was too long. i used W7's disk management to perform full format.

how do i check my SMART?

thanks!

I think there is no reason to use full format for this case. Anyway, if you want to check SMART there are many freeware products that can do this for you, just google it. One is HDTune.

actually a full format of a 2tb drive in windows 7 could take that longs since it is wiping every sector of the drive. But a quick format is all that is needed.

It is a great software that you can use to check to see if it is bad. People said it is 95% accurate. You can google it and install it in your computer. Then follow the instruction on the screen. There are short and long tests you can use.

After checking SMART...

Would you have the ability to test this drive on another machine that has the same port type that you have problems with on this ASUS mb to see if the problem carries on with the drive onto another machine?

Maybe at your friend's house, work, local computer shop buddy, etc.
