I have a SATA WD5000CSRTL which spins fine. My power and data cables are fine (i test them with another HD).

It sounds like a working hard drive, except it's not recognized.

I'm fairly experienced with repairs (i repair mobo's for clients), but i have never bothered with hard drives. I'm interested in how i should go about diagnosing what the problem is.

Any advice (besides "take it to a pro" "understand DIY risks"...etc) would be appreciated. There is no valuable data, i want to learn how this situation would be diagnosed and fixed.

Thanks.

If you want to find info about the problem how to diagnose it, you should start reading some of the forum areas.

Seems your case could be firmware, but would have to be confirmed of course.

pcb # should start with 7xxxx
printed on the back side

send an image of it in addition to the full model # if possible

It was given to me inside a WD Caviar Green box. That's why i thought it was a WD. I guess it's a Segate, sorry about that.

Thank you very much. I created a R232-TTL adapter and fixed the drive. Everything is working great now.

Very interesting repair
