Hi,
I have a WD5000BPVT 500GB sata laptop drive which had been disconnected (don't know if from power, data or both) while working.
After that, it is detected in bios as 'hard drive' 0Gb. I can't hear any spinning. It clicks 6+2+2 (or so) times and thats all.
Aim is to refurbish the drive, data not important. Pcb seems sound. Any DIY tips? Thanks.

Not much, but if some cheap tools needed, ready to invest.

Well, you would need at least some basic tools to test ROM, SA, Heads, etc...

Namely?

Which tools do you suggest?

Tools are useless without relevant experience and skills needed to properley use them.

Your media knocks several times, and is not identified. this is not a good sign, very likely you have some level of physical damage and professional assistance is needed. Without it, your data is very unlikely to be recovered.

You are right, and unfortunately I lack skills. :(

No data is to be recovered. Drive should be saved. Need to know if it is pcb, firmware or some other inner fault. Can I rule out with free/cheap tools and little knowledge what works and what doesn't?

Maybe you are lucky and it's only a damaged ROM module or SA module, or a bad head that you can depop...

Can I find out if pre-amp has gone using a multimeter?
What is depop?

Thanks, good advice, but I am also capable to give it to myself. No need to come here to hear that. :?

Where is SMART data located? On platters? If I can read SMART, it means 1 head is good?

I connected the drive and this time it identified OK and appeared in disk management as unpartitioned. Testdisk found 3 partitions and restored them. I cannot open them, explorer stops responding. As said earlier, I don't need any data off it. Surface scan shows lots of slow sectors and AMNF. Checking firmware in WDR also shows bad modules. On this site I found a firmware labelled as

WD5000BPVT-22HXZT3-00650018E which seems close to mine, that is
WD5000BPVT-22HXZT3_01.01A01 (these last numbers are the firmware version which is identical with the above).

But what is 00650018E? Mine is 00650009. Is it compatible? I find in the log, that it is ROM version (Версия ПЗУ - lot of Russian speaking members here I know). My ROM seems to be ok, so it won't be an issue. May try to repair SA with someone's help. Btw I have 194 modules (of which 147 is bad :( ), while the firmware I downloaded has 461. Almost 300 modules missing???
Any ideas what might be worth a try? Thanks to anyone who can help. My aim is to repair the drive, if possible.

I do not think repairing without resolving heads issue first will go to far.

Just a wild guess, but perhaps the drive data that was on the platters might have been crupped by the power down, or data interruption and nothing to do with the heads or hardware. As I looked through your post, it looks like something on the software side went astray and the test image you showed below marks all the drive information. Perhaps wiping every partition table and creating a new one, including and low level format might make the drive work again normally.

Just an idea.

A brand new 500GB 2,5" costs about € 40,- to 45,-

I think its wasting time and money for trying to
revive this defect drive - especially as its not for
recovery any data.

Besides the issues (bios statement of 0GB) there
is a counter of 42 pending sectors which might
be also defect - and perhaps some more ....

I don't think wiping the user area will help fixing system area. But I may be wrong.

If heads are really good, then either the media or firmware (or both) are damaged.
If there is someone familiar with WDR please post (or pm) instructions on how to repair firmware.

And the drive is a Zepfyr so you can't just self-scan it in a simple way too :)

If you know a difficult way, why not share it?

Helpless why not look at this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25867 Lots of answers to a lot of your questions are already on this forum asked by others in the past the forum search function would help you out a LOT! Don't expect the Pro's to offer up their methods of repair its highly unlikely to happen they discuss those among themselves via PM and offer non Dr people like yourself helpful insights on the best course of action to get your data recovered successfully they don't recommend/support DIY recovery attempts.

Thanks I already read that one, if there is something useful, I will try. I am past that point to expect a pro help me.
I am seeking 'unpro' help. Some people have experimented with bad hdd's, someone may come up with something useful.

http://nazyura.hardw.net/Mavr_fl.zip (PCB flash)

Post here the SA Mods (zip them).

Also your replies tend to be RUDE sometimes, you should remember that no-one have the obligation to help you.

And last :

If you try to self-scan the drive it will not work. You can't self-scan Zepfyr the same way you self-scan other WD drives.
And most likely it wouldn't solve the problem either.

Me rude? I want to experiment/repair and that is clearly said, why do people advise to buy a new one? :?:
I didn't mean to offend anyone, but if I have done so, I apologize.
I'll try Nazyura project and post here. Use wdr6, hope its full version.

I have already read those similar topics, but nowhere is happy ending. :(
I've done Nazyura project, files are attached below. What do you think?

And another thing: when I run Western Digital quick test in a laptop, I get immediately drive cable error code 0219.
When I run the same in desktop, dlgdiag hangs. Could it be bad SATA connector/connection on PCB?

SMART looks not so good now.
But head test is always good.
Bad sectors are all over the drive and not only one here and there, but as if all sectors were bad and just a few good.
When I go to change heads map in RAM I get error: Patter Offset not found.
SA defect list is empty: shouldn't there be errors if I cannot read modules?
G-list has the majority of errors on H1, how do I depop it in RAM?
Shall I write Heads 2 and Heads Map 02 and there are 4 buttons (Soft reset, Recalibrate, SSoft Reset, Set), what they supposed to do?
Some pictures, I hope it's just a logical damage and there is an easy fix.
