Sorry, your data is gone. It is my understanding that the drive does an internal secure erase making is absolutely unrecoverable.

WD SmartWare program which controls the password protection on WD drives suggests to re-format the drive if you forgot your password and want to re-use the drive. It also warns you that old data will be gone. If she confirmed that she wanted to re-format the drive here is what have happened
1. WD SmartWare changes data encryption key and stores it to the drive(old key will be replaced with the new key), so all previous data becomes garbage and cannot be recovered. This happens almost instantly
2. WD SmartWare will attempt to format the drive with the NEW encryption key, so you could re-use the drive. This takes several seconds

It doesn't matter if she waited only 30 seconds, because data was already gone by the time the format has began.

doomer is absolutely right here.
Data might be there on the disk as your sister stopped the format process after say 30 sec. but you have lost the encryption key, so its not possible to get the data back.

Yes I feel for you mate.

A house that is impossible to break into is fantastic - until you lock your keys inside.

Don't you have backups, external places that you saved your work, friends or relatives that might have a copy, or the school or colleague or university you studied from? Just recollect what you can.

I believe that einstein9 method of dealing with encrypted data with lost password might help in this case, if he can find someone who can help him.

I would like to quote einstein9.

Quote:
Dear Josh, and all the others who sent me PM`s about this:

1st. as i said many many times, NOT FOR SALE, SHARE or anything, i`ve been PAID in advance for good, and you guys cannot afford it (no joke) (only 2 here knows by WHOM)

2nd. for those who CLAIM that they have forensic cases, Gov. needs...etc and so on (sorry no bad feeling) but you guys have special Dep. who can handle such cases regardless of the details.

just wanted to say, again and most probably last comment on this topic:

IT IS NOT FOR SALE, SHARE, DISCUSS. anymore

so whatever is your case (Generally Speaking) there is always a way without my help on this, and sure you know where.

Good luck guys (all)

thank you

I just read that whole awkward painful thread again, maybe I missed the useful part? the part that specified where you CAN get your drive recovered? or any useful part where someone who has these issues is helped in any way?

I would like to make a correction. einstein9 method will work if and only if the Smartware does not encrypt the encrypted data when it replaces the encryption key.

HaQue, I may be wrong but if you read einstein9 posts carefully, there are some semblances of hints as whoelse has the....

Ok, if this is the semblances of hints :

I fail to see how it helps anyone.

There is so much usage of really terrible analogies and beating-around-the-bush that I am not really sure what this solution is.

The video shows accessing an empty disk, not accessing "your data". IMHO, a pretty vague, unfinished, poorly documented POC

I know that I may be expecting too much – but please believe you me that I have lost ALL my art life by one mistake.I am not an IT man and in no way can understand – let alone – reuse or misuse other people’s methods.
If necessary I can put my computer at the person’s disposal wherever in the world he may be to enable him get into my computer and inspect/correct my HDD and retrieve my life.
Please help me for the sake of anything and everything you believe in – as I am hopelessly struggling to save all my past work.
I am now like a mourner who has lost the dearests of the dearests – and need it to be brought back to life.
Yours Despondently
Thanks All of you
