Hi there ... im new here at the forum .. but i know a lot about the hddguru's ... your softwares and knowledge has helped me a lot in the past ... im having trouble with a Seagate HDD ..(for a change) ...
the model is

Model:ST3000DM001

SN:Z1F1YRC6
PN: ICH166-301

PCB:100687658 REV C
3TB of capacity... The problem is that when the BIOS recognize the HDD and im trying to format with any partitioner i get the wrong capacity like 31 MB or 2 GB... and finally cant format.

Sometines it's not even recognized in BIOS.

I've tried to do a firmware update using Barracuda-GrenadaBP-CC29-CC49 but the firmware says there is no HDD compatible ... eventhough i see it at BIOS. later the firmware program put the model of the hdd as it was discovered but next it attach the word FAIL...

As im familiar with barracuda 7200.11 BSY problem i connect the hdd to a RS232 interface ... and I get this

this is display accompanied with a clicking sound. then nothing ... its not responsive to the ctrl+Z command in any state.

I've also tried the READ CHANNEL short-circuit .... at my own risk following viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25736 guidelines because its not the same PCB

Can anyone help me? excuse my english its not my mother tongue

no its not my drive ... its a friend of mine ... i've never used in this computer...and yes the drive spins down after writing the FAIL SERVO stuff into the terminal ... sorry took me so long to reply ... i only have internet connection at work ... thanks for answering

ok ... but the HDD its recoverable ... im not interested in the data ... just want to use the HDD .. even with less capacity ... im from Cuba ... getting a new HDD its difficult here

another thing i discover today ... sometimes when its writes to the terminal the FAIL SERVO stuff ... after that its enter a state that displays caracter that its an arrow pointing to the right... it does not leave this state even when i remove the sata power connector ... only when i remove the PCB from the HDD ... then enter the beep ... click click ... FAIL SERVO stuff displayed ... hope this help ... i repeat i want only to recover the unit ... even with less capacity ... not interested in data ... thanx for all yours reply

thanx labtech ... ive done that ... i saw the BSY post of a 7200.14 ... the motor stops post ... and several others .. including 2 tutorial ... the one with the Seagate Terminal Tutorial, and the one with the identifying the read channel points ... i think i've done some research ... but i decide to post here because im getting nowhere ... specially with the read channel short circuiting ... i think i located the points correctly following the tutorial directions about the Y shape of the PCB printings ... but the thing is that i dont know how to do it or when to do it ... and i think that this trick can do the magic base on a post from here ... what do you think?

The "terminal magic trick fix" works if the drive has a firmware failure. And the fix is more or less specific to certain module drives, not all.
In this case, for your drive, then drive likely has a mechanical failure (and possible media damage) as it has already been indicated by pcimage.

I suggested that you read the posts within the search function with the goal of looking for explanation content that would confirm for yourself that the failure is mechanical (and not firmware) related. Instead you are looking for all-in-one fix, which for this drive will not work.

I have no interest in misleading you as I have nothing to gain from this. Just wanted to help you understand for yourself.

sorry labtech if I show you a wrong impresion about what i understand from your reply... i dont think your misleading me, just that i didnt do enough on my on... im not a pro concerning HDD repairing so i didnt get that the drive was unrecoverable from what pcimage said ... as it's seem to be the case ... that why i told you that i,ve already done some things ... i not trying to discard anybody opinion here ... i trust this site and i know you are skilled ... just im not and im trying my best ... dont need a magic fix ... just to know what problem can be fix via a firmware update and when not ... thanks for your comment .. now i know that my friend has another Seagate paperweight

Firmware is installed on the disk itself. The mechanics have to be in working condition to work with the firmware. Since the drive's mechanics are likely failed, then the firmware can't be fixed.

The mechanics would have to be stabilized using another drive for parts and so on. In your case, it is not worth pursuing this as data is not important.

i agree with you ... i had have a LOT of trouble with Seagate products .. of almost all series ... 7200.11, 7200.9, 7200.14 ... 160, 250, 500GB ... in my country its very common to import Seagate products ... i have manage to recover some of them, by mean of the 7200.11 BSY solution or by simplest methods, like HDD regenarator, HDAT2, LLF, TEST DISK of Hirens BootCD ... others just become paperweight .... thanx a lot to you and the HDDGuru site
