Hi 0383A
i answered you in PM.

If you have a little of soldering skill you can also try what "fzabkar" wrote.
Also, if you have soldering skill, i can send you those TVS diodes...

Consider that it's not sure that cutting diiodes (or replacing them) would fix the pcb because we still don't know if there are further damages on pcb components.

report us when you get the diodes Fixed.

Maybe you can access to data or maybe more work needed.

Hello,
i received your pcb today at 6:00 p.m.

Changed the shorted 12v diode, other diode and resistors are good, but your pcb don't work.
It gets very very very hot after 5 seconds since power on on RAM chip.

So probably this means that the RAM chip is shorted!

We need a new PCB.

Sorry, i had to unsolder the rom chip because it was impossible to read it from pcb.
The shorted ram prevents rom reading, after i unsoldered the rom i was able to read it with eprom.

ROM backup:
Attachment:
ROM.rar [179.38 KiB]
Downloaded 464 times

P.S.
RAM chip has also burn signs!

I read inside ROM some hdd infos:
WD10EADX-00TDHB0
FW: 77.04D77

Hi hhddrec,
he didn't say that he has a donor drive, he told me that he got just a new sata/usb adapter (to decrypt data).
Now he needs a donor pcb for his drive which i shipped to him this morning.

P.S.
never happened to you that RAM chip got very hot with burn smelling after TVS diode swap?
This is what happened to his native pcb after i changed the 12v TVS, RAM chip fried after few seconds since i gave power to the pcb.

It was not just a TVS problem.

Dear All,

here is a new update:
Thxs to Michael Chiklis, I received yesterday a new Sata PCB with a ROM copy from my original one. I installed the Sata PCB on the disk, connected to Sata PCB to a sata power cable and turned the computer on. I could hear the disk starting to spin. I let it like that during 10 minutes. No smoke, no heat, no burning smell. Turned everything off. Took the disk and installed the USB PCB on it. At this stage I wanted to re install the whole in it's case, but after a few attempts I abandoned the idea.

I plugged the power cable, then the usb cable. I heard again the disk starting to spin. Windows popup appeared with "new device found, starting initializing". Then error message came as Windows did not found the right driver for the device.

After that a popup from WDsmartware "WD quick view" appear with the red light blinking, it gives me the modell of the HD, the use of it, and temp. And there it mentions "hot"

If I open the WDsmartware software, it promps me for the pw. PW works, and I can see now all my data. But I still has another warning from WD Smartware. It mentions that "the HD has overheated, and that the drive will automatically shut down within 4 minutes in the case there is nothing to cool the drive. I have to deconnect the drive as soon as possible." Strange if I touch the disk, temperature is totally normal.

I will start to save my data on a new disk later today, and hope it won't shut down every 4 minutes.

thanks to all for your kind assistance

Congratulations now just make sure you implement a good backup strategy. Its cheaper & less hassle than having to do data recovery :)

You could also look at Office365 Small Business http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/busin ... 20365_text

The cheapest version now has 1Tb of cloud storage for £3.30 per user per month
Or if you want Office software included then £8.40 per user per month

So I started to save data, but it will take a long time to do. As after 4 minutes the drive cut his connection to the computer. Then I have to unplug wait the drive to be cooler, and plug it again. start again to copy.
And yes the drive get warm. Not hot, but warm. Should I use ice to cool it down? :)

Yes Loki, backup strategy has been changed in order to avoid in the future the same case. thx. We learn from our errors, isn't it?

Put cooler to mantain temp down.

there are Profesional tools for data recovery in thoses cases but are expensibe if you are not a pro.

The drive got overheated by your old pcb due to shorted RAM chip, the high temperature issue was recorded in SMART status for this reason you still get overheat warnings.
The shorted RAM chip got very hot so the heat was transfered to the drive, maybe the drive got damaged due to the high temperature when it was attached to your bad pcb.

Hi Michael,

and by cooling it with the dyson will it help to keep the temp at an average level?
