I have swap the rom to the Dona pcb and boot it in safemode. I also download the firmware. Should be the right one.
I can read rom out using wdmarvel, but it can not load module 11.
And I found out wdmarvel doesn't have shriek family!
Does it support Shrek family?
Need help.
Thanks

Can you read the resources with SeDiv?

http://sediv2008.narod.ru/Easy3.9Passwo ... 567890.rar
http://sediv2008.narod.ru/Settings.rar

Can you upload all the modules that you can read with WDMarvel?

Finally got the wd_marvel work. My PC's mother board is not compatible.
The HDD is in a very slow mode. It took me more than one hour to check half the modules. By now it's reading ID2514.
Looks like only ID04 is dead( can not read). ID24 CRC not valid.
In this family is ID04 the copy of ID03?
Slow issue is because of smart modules or weak head?

thanks again

Looks like slow issue is because of the broken 04.
but I don't understand why broken 04 makes reading SA modules so slow.

You really are in way over your head. Unless you've got a year to waste and a few thousand dollars to burn, you'd better just get it to a pro. Not an easy model even for the professionals to work on.

Attached is the first half. I stopped the reading process last night. I am reading the rest of them now.
It's a bit strange. Sediv can not run at all( error pops up in my win7 32bit ).
And the module file uploaded by WD_Marvel is not rpm file. They are MOD files.

thanks

Yep it is a Shrek. Is there any story about this monster? And module 04, looks like it's a big nut table.
Well after several weeks, at least I know I can do something, although I can not fix it at the moment.
Thanks

I found something weird.
WDR shows control buffer size is 0KB.
I thought the 771931 is not compatible so I managed to take the four capacitors off the 771961 board and hard wired the sata to a sata connector. It's the same.
Does the wrong control buffer size mean something?

MOD 34 (G-list) has a lot of entries. I could be wrong, but ISTM that head #2 has problems.

I would try modifying MOD 02 and MOD 32 as in the following threads:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29187&start=20
http://www.alexsoft.org/viewtopic.php?t ... 4345#p4345

Hopefully you will be able to clone your drive with ddrescue (if your drive shows up in BIOS).

After lots of hours, finally it's fixed.
Thanks a lot fzabkar, although I didn't use your script.
I will explain tomorrow.

Last night when I had a look at Fzabkar's slowfix solution. I am not 100% sure it will work on my HDD, because in the sample MOD 02, address of flag "ODD" is not the same as mine, and I don't understand how the script clear that single byte.
Meanwhile I found a topic in a Chinese forum. They clear all the bytes to zero from flag "ODD" to "01 00 28" in MOD02( please see pic).

From the two solution, I am quite sure at least one will work. So I tried the Chinese solution using WDR5.3 first. And it works!

Now I am backing up bloody 1.6TB data to another wd element. It will take about 24 hours. Hope the old wd element will not brake down again.

And I am quite interested in what's the reason of slow wd, and why clearing MOD02 will fix it. Can any Guru explain?

Thanks a lot FZABKAR.

Congratulations.

My script is independent of the actual location of the relevant section within MOD 02. Also, instead of deleting this section, it merely disables it by writing a zero to byte position #02 within the section.

Perhaps the following article will be of help to you.

Analysis of Western Digital ROYL firmware MOD 02:

PS. You can keep the $20. ;-)

I have similar problem, I have
WD My Passport Ultra 2TB,
HDD model inside WD20NMW-11AV3S2 and
PCB 2060-771961-001 REV A

One day it stopped working, no clicking noises, it spins starts moving head and after some time it stops spinning and starts again immediately again to spin... I suspected that it was head problem... So I ordered same disk, same specs and disassembled. Replaced heads and I got same problem on broken hard disk, and on new disk with old head I had no problems. It worked OK... After that I asked my friend to replace two BIOS IC, since I thought it is PCB problem... But after replacing BIOS IC's old disk was in slow mode as biggerpizza said. I could see size of disk and type of disk, but could not access disk files. So we decided to return BIOC IC's as they were originally. But then I have same problem and with the new disk, it is in slow read mode, and old one has same problems, stops spinning after some time. Interesting is that if I swap motherboards both of disks are spinning, I can hear head that is trying to read but never initializes... I don't see disk, I can see only My Passport 0820.

What to do now? Can you help me? Pleaseeeee :(

I will buy some beer to one who help me

We just had one of these drives. Same symptoms with slow read etc. Cloning would have taken a month and extraction of small jpeg files took about 5 to 10 minutes each.

As there was no on bridge encryption or WD smartware protection we just converted the existing pcb to sata. Tried cloning and file extraction and again it was very slow.

So then we backed up MOD 2. Just had to write back the edited module as in the post above and 'voila'. Drive reading at near normal speed. Data safely copied to a replacement.

I would like to thank biggerpiza for taking the time to post his solution!

Just got it and just tried to resolve slow responding problem in first time? It's look like you are from 2013.

Hi dick,How did you wrote MOD02 into the WD20NMVW Flash ROM? I used WDMarvel tool to write the edited version of MOD02 back to the flash ROM but after reading the MOD02 again to see if the changes were OK surprisingly NO changes whatsoever everything back to the original, So confusing!
