Sure, it's XP/win 7 only and it have to be 32 bit version of the OS.

In any case i know that you already got it right with the undo bin ...

Maybe it's time to check those possible fake bad sectors with READ LONG ?

It has not dawned on me until now but i had cloned one of these drives before using the same acronis and same settings and there were no bad sectors on that drive. So i dont think fake bad sectors is the problem.

Can one of you guys please explain why crystaldiskinfo displays GS001A on the original drive but the 2GS001A on the modified WD drive?

I noticed in the disassembly of the .exe that right after the getHardDriveSerial function there are references to checking things about firmware. There is also quite a bit of PowerShell. the monitoring is insane, reminds me of modern videogame machines you find in amusement arcades where everything is connected to the vendors network and they monitor ever coin, play, minutes played, times played, etc.. every stat you can think of is sent straight to the vendor.

In WDR it shows the firmware as GS001A but in Ascii view with crystaldiskinfo it shows as 2GS001A so i dont know what is going on.

Both the original and another spare Toshiba same model both show GS001A in ascii mode.

If you are getting GS001A on the original and 2GS001A that might be the issue.

As I have explained to the OP twice already, he is not getting a "2" in the firmware version. That Identify Device word is signifying that the drive is using 50 bytes for ECC in READ/WRITE LONG.

To the OP, please copy and paste your before-and-after Identify Device data blocks (not the whole CrystalDiskInfo report).

What about spoofing the entire module 02 on the WD so it would report exactly the same info as the Toshiba ?

The module doesn't contain all the Identify Device info. For example, I can't find the RPM word.

Thats what i originally wanted to do but fzabkar mentioned there is is most likely crc. I have no problem desoldering the spi flash eeprom and dumping the data and reprogramming it but if its not possible to edit it then no point going through the trouble.

with the first edited hddss.bin flashed and original cloned, i was able to get into explorer and run an operator settings program and where it displays the motherboard, and other device info, it listed the WD as generic hard drive where it normally would list the toshiba model and serial.

To me that suggests that the unit is looking for some vendor specific information.

I believe it may be possible to edit the ROM. It appears to be comprised of separate configuration pages, each with its own CRC. If I'm correct, then it would simply be a matter of carving out the relevant CPs and patching them into the clone. In any case, specialist firmware tools would know how to recalculate the CRCs.

Did you have any luck with this ?

Yes i solved it. It was the serial#/model#/fw version#. The reason hddhackr didnt work originally was because i had to reallocate the bad sectors.

I have not gone into detail yet to see if it is just the serial# or if its all 3. Further testing is in order. It would be nice to use something other then pre 2013 WD drives. It would be nice to use a SSD but i am not aware of any that you can change the serial#..ect..ect.
