Hi

Hard drive is
model: ST1000LM024
part: HN-M101MBB/EX2

Laptop HDD led showed constant activity, rebooted successfully but then froze. HDD is now not recognized at all by computer, won't show in bios.

plugged in as a slave dmesg reports:

The drive sounds as though spinning up and clicks as though heads moving i think but i am not an expert.
There is no timeout, the drive does not give up or spin down or stop clicking until unplugged.

I have a very similar donor drive available with matching part numbers etc.

What is the likely cause of fault? heads/preamp or possibly PCB? i would expect the drive to spindown and not stop responding/freezing if just a head issue, is that possible?
I have read about a serial adapter to read diagnostic information, does this work on my drive and is there a schematic anywhere for this? would it help diagnose my issue?
can pcb be swapped on this model? is rom transplant necessary?

The lost information is not worth the cost of professional recovery to me but i am interested in trying anyway.
I have not opened the cover yet but i have use of a cleanroom if head surgery is necessary. other than that i have no specialist recovery tools.

Side question: I have read about connecting a working drive then suspending and swapping the pcb to a bad drive to recover data. in what situation does this work but swapping the pcb normally not work? why does it have to be connected then suspended? when there is a problem with the system area of the platter is this correct?

If it's clicking it will be a head issue, not DIY.

Contact Andy at Databusters in Glasgow, pro recovery might not be as expensive as you think!!

thanks guys, the cycle repeats with the cnt number increasing.
from looking at other dumps i think you will tell me this confirms a head issue?

is there any explanation of the output, out of interest?

thanks guys,
Head replaced & drive imaged.
few read errors and horrible noises but the report i was after is intact and i can have an easy week instead of writing it up again.

swap took me about two hours, worst part was the head retaining screw underneath, nearly stripped it.

I have a new found respect for what recovery people do.
I used to think i had steady hands now i know better.
going for a lie down. don't worry your jobs are safe, i am never doing that again.
