Some Realtek sound chips have a problem with XP SP2 and latest updates.

There is a patch on MS website.

But, better check your device manager first. Like Steve suggests.

Hi,
If You Could Actually Check The Sound Chip On The Board And Then Try To Find The Drivers From The Manufacturer Site For Sound I Am Sure you will Solve Your Problem

first thing I would do is go back to device manager , right click any device that isn't installed , then click "Update Driver " if that doesn't fix it , then download and install : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft ... 28&lang=en

Drivers can sometimes be a pain in the ass.. it helps if you have the install disk .. also since this is an HP computer look to see if you have a hidden partition on your hard drive ( this is the re-install partition) if you can see it ( as D drive ) the drivers should also be there

ok Let's try this
Assuming that your upgrade to XP Pro is from a legit copy . make sure you have SP2 installed
also go to Windows Update and and get all updates available ..
After you have all the updates.
go to the device manager , and every device that has a "?" or "!" or is in Other devices , right click , and click "Uninstall"
If it says you need to reboot , click "no" until you have them All uninstalled .. Then Reboot the computer .. Make sure you are connected to the internet then windows will look for the drivers when you reboot. if it asks for where , be sure to check the windows update box ..
Hope this helps

you just have to keep looking till you find the driver for each one that is in other devices .and yes it is probably the sound driver..

Hi download sisoft sandra, install and run click on sound devices and it will tell you exactly what chip it uses for your audio. Do a search on driverguide or HP website and download & run the driver setup and you should be done. Just in case go into your bios (usually F1 or delete when booting and check that your onboard audio is still enabled just in case a setting was changed accidentally. This will prevent driver installation also.
