I managed to fry the pcb by not looking when i plugged the power on the external usb box. (I got 2 different types of external usb box, same power plug except that the 12v and 5v are reversed. The drive just no longer spins up. i tried using the pcb from a WD5000AAKS-00TMA0 but all the drive does is spin up but is not detected at all (not detected during boot either)

What are my options for triing to recover the data?

sorry for the double post, but i can't see the option to edit my post.

also having looked at the burnt pcb, it's only the 'chip' directly infront of the sata power connector that is burnt, can this just be replaced?

but i got a few other questions after reading more on the forums.

1) if i can source a same model drive can i use the pcb from that? or is that only for older hdd?

2) what are the numbers that i am looking for in a donor drive? do i have to match the serial on the pcb aswell as the dcm on the actual drive? or is either fine

also the here's the numbers from the broken and other drive i have.

Broken
mdl: wd5000aaks-75tma0
date: 18 jun 2007
dcm: hhncnv2chb
serial on pcb: 2061-701477-800 AF XT 4D07 8MMJ 5 0004490 7 494

Working Drive
mdl: wd5000aaks-00tma0
date: 16 aug 2007
dcm dhnchv2mab
serial on pcb: 2061-701477-900 04P XT 4V05 1WPG 1 0003060 8 063

thanks in advance and any help would be apprciated, i desprately want to recover the data on the drive

I'm in Melbourne, Australia.

Hi,

U may try to replace the board, if it does not work, U may need to swap the ROM chip if there is one on the PCBs. It is also possible that the preamp inside the HDA has been burnt also, in this case PCB replacement won't solve the problem.

regards,
pepe

Thank for the reply ^^

the hdd still spins up with another pcb, but it doesn't detect properly cause the working pcb is from a hdd thats 2 months newer i guess. I noticed that only the diode (marked D3) right in front of the sata power connector is burnt, but i can't read it on either of the pcb's that i have since i'm a tard and nearly fried the second one trying to figure out why my external usb enclosure wasn't working. (turns out different brand enclosures can have same power connector's with different voltages going to different pins, in my case i had 12v going into 5v line for about 1min  )

Is it possible that it could just be the diode and i can replace that to retrieve my data?
I have asked in another thread what the diode is, and am just waiting on a reply. If anyone knows that'd be great.

It worked :good:

I was reading your post as my friend was checking the diode with a multi meter. I had bought another drive like it to check the marking/numbers on the diode (no help, no idea how to decifer what type of diode it is, AF 78A) but removing the diode has allowed me to power the drive and recover some photos and also the other unimportant junk on the drive.

Thank you So much
