I've been reading a lot of the posts on this forum lately but cannot find a solution to my problem:

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 that got burned (don't really remember how). Here's an image:

When I turn it on it will spin but I kindda clicks(beeps) every second or so.

I figured "just replace the board". I ordered the most similar board from the softcom website, replaced it and now the drive spins up ok, no beeps, but will not read of write from the disk. There are some differences between the boards but as I read there's suppose to be compatible. In my system the drive is seen as a Maxtor 6B300R0 and in System Management the capacity is 278GB. My original drive is 250GB. I figure that the firmware doesn't match and go to a place to switch the burned component with the one on the board I received. Same thing the drive spins up but will not read and I still read it as 6B300R0.

Tried a demo of GetDataBack which helped me in the past but I only get IO errors.
Tried HDD Capacity Restore but it says hdd is damaged in some way and it cannot fix it.

After a lot more reading I suspected the preamp in the head unit but the new board doesn't get burned when I connect it so I'm not so sure. My next step is to get a multimeter and try to test the preamp following a guide on this forum but in the meanwhile is there something I can do ?

Send to DR or ask a pro. No solution for free. No logical recovery software can revive your HDD if it is recognised by its factory alias. A multimeter can not help too much. Either firmware (and is not flashable like cell phone or other device with a flash ROM) or head stack issue. Sad but true, HDDs fail.
Regards.

Thanks for the reply, but:

Maybe I wasn't clear enough the drive should be seen as 6B250R0 instead of 6B300R0. My other drives are recognized in similar ways (Right-Click in Computer Management-Disk). For example my working Seagate Drive is seen as ST3250823A.

I don't understand why it sees it as a 300GB disk instead of 250GB when I only changed a chip that from what I understand is a capacitor (even if they don't exactly match).

I just wanted to use the multimeter to see if the preamp was also burned. And lastly:

I thought that I was asking a pro by posting here.......

In some cases it will take few pages to describe a solution to a problem.
Please, don't expect that to happeen. A lot of them are very busy and answering questions on their free time.

Harddrivespecialist is absolutely right : it will take pages and a lot of time to reply, there's a difference between things to say and a job to do.
Regards.

I'm in no hurry and I appreciate every reply...

Can someone help me with some general info? What part of the PCB stores the name (model) of the disk it's attached to and which is the rom chip on my board ?

The name (model) is NOT stored on the PCB, it's stored on the platters in a module in the service area.

The ROM is the 8-legged chip on your PCB, top right.

Hi

I don't think so. Swapping the ROM could be sufficient in the first round.

I did swap the board and connected the drive through USB. It spins up without clicking but the computer does not see it. I go into Control Panel -> Administrative -> Storage and it sees the disk as 6B300R0 (capacity 279GB instead of 6B250R0-232GB) and I didn't know what to do next.

I went to a computer service place and had the piece that burned on my original board replaced with the piece from the new board but I get exactly the same result.

The guy there told me that this is pointless and that I would burn the new chip also but it works perfectly.

Hi,

Just to clarify things: U have replaced Q500 on the original board (that was burnt) with a good one and your 6B250R0 drive is detected as 6B300R0?
In this case There's probably some FW problem with the drive also.

Thanks for the reply.... That's exactly what I did ... Both boards are detected as 6B300R0 with this Q500..

Hi

What is the FW version on the label (CODE) of the drive (something like BAH41B10), and what is the FW version the drive reports uppon detection?

I think ROM swap seem pointless since U managed to repair the original board replacing Q500.

regards,
pepe

On the disk it is BAH41BM0.

I don't really know how to check that in software so I do this: Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Disk Drives -> Maxtor 6B300R0 -> Properties and I get:

Device Instance Id: USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_MAXTOR&PROD_6B300R0&REV_BCH4\10000E000B563DCB&0
Hardware Ids: USBSTOR\DiskMaxtor__6B300R0_____BCH4
Firmware Revision is blank.

You disk is in C-SA it will not work in LBA in this mode
I cannot say you the reason why you drive is in C-SA but usually that's firmware issue

Should I be worried ? I don't even know what this means... Is it an error with the disk itself ? How do I fix it..

Disk has a malfunction
You cannot fix it you need to ask DR company for help or forget about the disk
